Unmissable sights in Tbilisi

The capital city of Georgia, Tbilisi is a bohemian paradise. The vibrant city is known for its surrounding mountains, its traditional Old Town, narrow streets with boutique shops, and ancient Eurasian crossroads. But what many tourists don’t know is that underneath all the eclectic architecture, and well-preserved landmarks, the city is also filled with speakeasies and hipster cafes. With landmarks like the 17th century Narikala Fortress, and many 4th-7th century cathedrals, and the modern avant-garde Bridge of Peace just a hop-skip away, the city is a perfect mix of old and new.

Narikala Fortress

One of the most visited landmarks in Tbilisi, Narikala Fortress is a must-see. Once a Persian citadel back in the 4th century, the fortress boasts breathtaking views of the city. Aside from the views inside the fortress, you can also find the Tbilisi Botanical Garden, and the Church of St. Nicolas inside. There are two ways to visit the Narikala Fortress – one is by cable car from Rike Park, which allows you to take in the beautiful panoramic views, and the other is by walking up to the entrance from Meidan, another popular landmark in the city.

Holy Trinity Cathedral of Tbilisi

The Holy Trinity Cathedral of Tbilisi, commonly known as Sameba, is located in the historic neighborhood of Avlabari. The third-tallest Eastern Orthodox Cathedral in the world, it boasts outstanding views of the city and its surrounding areas. Aside from its grandiose architecture and religious nature, the Holy Trinity Cathedral of Tbilisi is also hailed as a “symbol of the Georgian national and spiritual revival” due to the historical context in which the cathedral was built.

The Bridge of Peace

Sitting over the Mtkvari river as a pedestrian crosswalk, the Bridge of Peace is one of the most visited landmarks in Tbilisi. Designed by Italian architect, Michele De Lucchi, the Bridge of Peace is probably one of the most avant-garde and eye-catching designs in Georgia. Over 156 meters long, the bridge has become a very convenient cross-point that connects Rike Park and the “old town.” It is also a fantastic place to take in breathtaking views of the city, whatever time of day.

Svetitskhoveli Cathedral

Located in the historical town of Mtskheta, the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral is one of the oldest churches in Georgia. Since it was built and restored, the cathedral has been the religious center of Christian Georgia for centuries. It is currently the seat of the archbishop of Mtskheta and Tbilisi, and because of its history and positioning in Georgia, is one of the most venerated places of worship to this day.

Jvari Monastery of Mtskheta

One of the most popular religious landmarks in the ancient city of Mtskheta, the Jvari Monastery is a beautiful 6th century mountaintop monastery. The monastery is still an important pilgrimage site, and is considered to be one of the most sacred places to this day. With its panoramic views, and beautiful architecture, the Jvari Monastery is a favorite destination that visitors can visit for free.

Shota Rustaveli Avenue

Fun fact: the street is named after the poet, Shota Rustaveli, who is hailed as the greatest medieval Georgian poet.

Royal baths

One of the most memorable and must-do activities when in Georgia, going to a sulfur bath is almost a Tbilisi tradition. The Royal Baths of Abanotubani are the most popular bath houses in the city and should be on your list of places to visit. You can book a private room for 140 GEL which will give you access to your own changing room, sauna and plunge pool, and of course, your very own private sulfur bath.

Sioni Cathedral

Located in the heart of old Tbilisi, the Sioni Cathedral is one of the most memorable religious landmarks in Georgia. The medieval church is an important religious landmark, especially for Georgians, as it is home to the sacred cross of the St. Niño, Georgia’s patron saint. The church, which was initially built in the 6th-7th centuries, is still one of the most popular landmarks in the city to this day.

Mtatsminda Park

The Mtatsminda Park, located on the top of the Mtatsminda Mountain, is a popular attraction for locals and tourists alike. The hilltop amusement park draws all types of visitors: adrenaline-junkies who are after the thrill of riding roller coasters; families who are looking for a fun day out; and casual tourists who are after the beautiful panoramic views of the city aboard the ferris wheel.
