Bali is famous all over the world for its majestic temples, beautiful beaches, fun nightlife, and much more, but a lot of visitors of the island don't realize that you can take your adventure to the next level and blaze your own trail with a Bali road trip!
Hitting the open road and exploring unfamiliar destinations with a car full of friends, snacks, and good music is a surefire recipe for creating unforgettable memories and you can make a road trip the highlight of your next Bali vacation in just a few simple steps. Once you find the right car rental in Bali (or if you prefer to charter a private driver), you'll be revving your engines in no time.

    Car Rentals in Bali

When it comes to traveling via your own private car in Bali, you'll have two very accessible options. The first option (and, in our opinion, the most fun one) is to rent a car in Bali and drive it yourself. Opting for a rental might require a little bit more work to accomplish, but it’ll definitely be worth it if you enjoy driving.
The other simpler option would be to charter your own private car with a local professional driver. This is a smart choice if no one in your group is willing to be a designated driver and employing a local driver comes with the bonus of them being familiar with the island and having the inside track on shortcuts and recommendations that you wouldn’t get anywhere else!

How to Rent a Car in Bali

If you want to experience the complete freedom of driving yourself on the open road, then you can rent a car with Klook in just a few easy steps:
    1. Head to the car rental page here
    2. Input your pick-up location (for Bali, you can only pick your rental up at the Ngurah Rai International Airport) along with the dates that you'll need the rental then click on "Search"
    3. Select your preferred car rental among the options that will be shown, make sure your choice matches your group's space and seating needs!
    4. Once you've selected a car, you'll be able to review the payment details, requirements, and other details to proceed with your rental.
    5. Next, you'll just need to input the driver's details before payment (note: if you’re filling out the form but someone else will be driving, make sure you input their details and not yours!)
    6. Finally, you can pay for the deposit on your rental! Another important thing to take note of is that the credit card you pay the deposit with must be: in the driver’s name and be a physical credit card as you’ll need to use the same credit card to pay for the rest of your balance upon arriving in Bali.
You can then proceed to pick the car up when you arrive in Bali. Staff from the car rental option you selected will meet you at the airport and hand your rental off at the specified time and date.

When you rent a car with Klook (whether in Bali or another country), your rental will come with insurance options, which means you’ll be able to have some coverage in case you get into any accidents on the road.

Tourist Requirements for Driving a Car in Bali

To be able to rent and drive a car in Bali, the driver must have an International Driving Permit (also known as an International Driving License). You can check here to learn more about the process of getting an IDP as well as to confirm if your country is able to provide you one.
The general requirements for successfully applying for an IDP are that the applicant has to be over 18 years old, has a valid driver’s license in their country of origin, and has a valid passport.
Klook tip: According to the Bali website, if you can’t obtain an IDP in your own country, Bali recognizes permits that have been obtained online through their online partner.
Aside from the usual IDP requirements, it’s also worth noting that you must be at least 21 years old to drive as a tourist in Bali. All of these requirements will also apply to renting and driving a motorbike.
