1. Gyozaoh! Dotonbori
True to its name, Gyozaoh! Dotonbori specialises in all types of gyoza — complete with meat, vegetarian, and vegan options. The restaurant is entirely non-smoking, with private rooms which are a godsend for active kids. Visit at 5pm when it opens; otherwise, expect long queues, especially on weekends.

2. Bikkuri Donkey
Bikkuri Donkey is a rustic restaurant that serves a variety of hamburger steaks on mini hot plates. There’s a kids’ menu here too, comprising a regular burger plate or an egg burger plate. The restaurant is non-smoking and, if you have a stroller with you, the staff will be more than happy to help store it during your meal.

3. The Royal Host
The Royal Host is one of Japan’s ‘family restaurants’, which are characterised by extensive menus with large pictures, as well as all-you-can-drink stations. The diner sure knows its way to childrens’ hearts: besides being able to choose a small toy from a basket, they will also love the adorable kid’s menu. High chairs are readily available too, and the restaurant is non-smoking — save for a lone smoking room.

4. Chikuyotei
Chikuyotei specialises in unagi — dig into ala carte unagi bowls, or a line-up of set meals. Don’t worry about the language barrier as the restaurant is manned by English-speaking staff, who will readily provide an English menu. There are private rooms available here too.

5. Mizuno Okonomiyaki
Did you know that okonomiyaki originated from Osaka? Try the crème de la crème at Mizuno Okonomiyaki, which was awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand award for six consecutive years! Try the popular gluten-free ‘yamaimo-yaki’, which is made with Japanese yam instead of flour. The restaurant is non-smoking, and children are more than welcome here.

9. Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu
Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu specialises in one thing, and one thing only, which is gyukatsu (fried beef cutlet). Osaka has multiple outlets but, the Namba Sennichimae outlet, in particular, is especially kid-friendly. They offer a kids’ menu, space for strollers, an English menu, and is entirely non-smoking.

14. Pokemon Café
The Pokemon café is, without a doubt, one of Japan’s most popular themed cafés, requiring reservations that can be made 31 days beforehand. Kids will love the Snorlax’s Tummy Filling Naptime lunch plate, or the crowd-favourite Pikachu plate. For young kids, there are also special children’s menu items. If you’re lucky, you might even be greeted by a Pikachu mascot during your visit.

15. Kumanote Café
Affectionately known as the Bear Paw café, the Kumanote café is where you’ll receive your order from a giant bear’s paw. Indeed, you won’t see any waiters or waitresses here; simply place your order via a tablet, and wait for the furry paw to appear. Try the bear paw parfait (complete with a cute paw-shaped cookie!), or the bear cookies.
