Correct us if we’re wrong, but the highlight of every trip to Japan is the food, and even more so in the capital of Tokyo. Dismiss all claims of Tokyo not being kid-friendly; there are plenty of great food spots that welcome kids — you just have to know where to look!
1. Zauo Fishing Restaurant
Say hello to lots of good old family fun at Zauo Fishing Restaurant, where you can try fishing for your own meal. Rent a fishing rod and get cracking — if you manage to catch a fish, you’ll even be able to score a discount. Enjoy your catch as fresh sashimi, grilled, deep-fried, boiled, or as sushi.

2. Kura Sushi
Talk about dining and having fun at the same time: at Kura Sushi, an extremely value-for-money conveyor belt sushi chain, exchange five empty plates for a chance at the capsule machine (gachapon). Try the Harajuku outlet to try a variety of sushi crepes, or head to the Asakusa outlet to play a couple of festival games before your meal.

3. Teppan Baby
Dig into ten types of authentic okonomiyaki at Teppan Baby, a casual restaurant that welcomes children with open arms. That’s not all: you’ll be asked to write any words or phrases of your choice on a piece of paper, which will then be used by the staff to put on an improvised play! There’s an English menu readily available too; for a non-smoking outlet, head to the one at Shibuya.

4. Curry Station Niagara
Calling all train enthusiasts! All aboard at Curry Station Niagara, a curry restaurant run by a passionate train enthusiast. The shop is covered in train-related memorabilia, with lots of model trains for kids to play with. The food is also delivered via a train; the restaurant only serves curry, but there’s a kid’s meal that comes in a themed shinkansen.

5. Latte Chano-mama
Latte Chano-mama is entirely designed with children in mind: with an innovative meals-in-bed concept, the restaurant serves its food atop plush beds, complete with lots of soft cushions. This allows parents to enjoy their meal whilst the little ones roll or crawl around on padded surfaces — it’s a win-win situation! The restaurant also has a special section for breastfeeding and diaper changing.

6. Kumachan Onsen
Have the cutest hotpot experience at Kumachan Onsen, where the soup stocks come in the shapes of teddy bears. Choose from six different soup flavours, each of which comes with a standard vegetable set and a meat platter. Watch as the teddy slowly melts once the heat is turned on, looking as if it’s really enjoying its very own onsen!

7. Tempura Tsunahachi
Savour your meal at one of Tempura Shinjuku Tsunahachi’s private rooms, which is great for kids. Check out the English menu, and choose from a range of ala carte or set menu options. The seafood used is purchased fresh from Tsukiji market every morning, alongside vegetables sourced from local farms. High chairs are also available upon request, with the entire restaurant being of a non-smoking nature.

8. Organic Café Lulu
Aiming to provide a holistic space for both parents and children, Organic Café Lulu pulls out all the stops with a wooden playhouse, mini reading nook, and a carpet of artificial grass. Dairy- and egg-free meals are available here, with parents being able to customise the texture of their baby’s meal according to age.

9. Share Green Minami-Aoyama
Share Green isn’t a restaurant per se, but a large green space that’s perfect for the little ones to frolic around in. Grab a cup of coffee and a pastry from Little Darling Coffee Roasters, relax on wooden lounge chairs, check out the flowers at Solso Park, and more. You might even find a food truck or two!

10. Kichiri Mollis
It’s no secret that Japanese izakayas are generally not kid-friendly. Kichiri Mollis is one of the exceptions, which goes all out to welcome families with kids in tow. The booth seats have raised tatami cushions for kids to relax on, with the restaurant providing both English and Mandarin menus. There’s even a children’s menu as well!

11. Minoru Shokudo
The 9th floor of Ginza’s Mitsukoshi department store has been designated a baby-friendly floor, complete with a baby facility and nursing room. Minoru Shokudo is located on this floor as well, enticing with fresh seasonal ingredients from domestic farms. Take a look at the kids’ menu, or order take-out to enjoy at the outdoor terrace garden.

12. Mr Pepper Café
Travel to the future at Pepper Parlor, where robots run the show. The robots take orders, interact with games and fortune telling, and even help diners take photos. Food-wise, enjoy a line-up of Western-Japanese fusion dishes, or a seasonal afternoon tea.

Sink your teeth into Umami Burger’s decadent burgers, which hail from Los Angeles. Choose from over 20 types of burgers, including the classic ‘Umami’. There’s a kid’s menu too, which can be washed down with a fancy milkshake or ice cream sundae.

14. Corn Barley
Be immersed in the world of Studio Ghibli at Corn Barley. Go all out with the Homage Course, which consists of six courses that recreate a dish from a different Ghibli movie. Even better: each course also comes with movie-related accessories and props!

Doesn’t Kichijoji Petit Mura look like it just fell out of a storybook? Take your time to explore the complex — highlights include the Temari no Oshino cat café, the Happa teahouse, and the Kashigoya art gallery.

16. Pokemon café
Make your reservations early for the Pokemon café, which is easily Japan’s most popular themed café! The Tokyo outlet is the world’s first Pokemon café, wowing with spectacularly themed food. Children will especially love the kids plate, which comes with a Pikachu-shaped hamburger. Don’t miss out on the desserts as well — we’ve got our eyes on the intriguing Poké ball dessert ball.

18. Alice in Fantasy Book
Fall headfirst down the rabbit hole into the whimsical world of Alice in Wonderland at Alice in Fantasy Book. Don rabbit ears, marvel at the fantastic decor, and be spoiled for choice with a large variety of themed food. Go for the popular cheese fondue, or a plate of spaghetti bolognese that resembles the Cheshire Cat.

19. Ninja Café

20. Rokunen Yonkumi
Step into the shoes of your favourite anime character at Rokunen Yonkumi, a school-themed izakaya. Fill a basket with unlimited childhood candy, and interact with staff dressed as teachers. The menu looks like an attendance book — offering items like curry rice, which is popular among Japanese youths, and drinks that look like a science experiment set.

22. Asakusa Yokocho
Drop by the fun festival-themed Asakusa Yokocho, a food court decked out with neon signs and festival games — with a splendid view of Tokyo Skytree to boot. Rent a kimono, dine at any of the seven restaurants, and take lots of photos at every turn.

23. Shibuya Yokocho
Shibuya Yokocho, on the other hand, is a nostalgic food court that’s modelled after a traditional shopping arcade. The food court showcases food from different prefectures: seize the chance to try the ‘spicy sea bowl’ from Hokkaido, beef tongue from Sendai, eel from Nagoya, or chanko nabe (the food of sumo wrestlers).
