We’ll also share how to get to the island, how to get around, and other insightful tips so you can travel without a hitch.

How to Get to Nusa Penida

One of the main ways to get to Nusa Penida is by boat. Now, whether you prefer a speedboat, a public ferry, or a private tour boat is up to you. Some of the things you have to consider
before choosing your ride are your budget, the duration of the boat trip, and where in Bali you’ll be departing from.
Klook Tip: Some of the main ports in Bali that have boats departing for Nusa Penida include Sanur, Kusamba, and Padang Bai. When planning your itinerary, consider your accommodation and how near it is to the port so that you won’t have to travel too far.

    By fast boat or speedboat

    -
    • Journey duration: around 20 to 45 minutes
    • Average one-way ticket cost: 150,000 to 260,000 IDR (13 to 24 AUD)
    • Pro: You can bring baggage weighing up to 30kg.
The fastest and most popular way to get to Nusa Penida is via fast boats or speedboats. Quite a few different speedboat companies operate the route from Sanur, Kusamba, and Padang Bai on the mainland so you’ll have a lot of options to choose from.
Some of these fast boat companies include Axe Stone Fast Cruise, Gili Getaway, Angel Billabong Fast Cruise, Semabu Hills, and The Angkal. They all run trips to and from Nusa Penida daily, with boats leaving at various times throughout the day. Tickets do sell out quickly
Klook Tip: Don’t let motion sickness ruin your trip! Pop a travel sickness tablet an hour before you head out for a smoother boat ride.

    By public ferry or RORO

    • Journey duration: around 30 mins to 1 hour
    • Average one-way ticket cost: 32,000 to 90,000 IDR (3 to 9 AUD)
    • Pro: You can bring a scooter onboard for a higher ticket price.
Besides the speedboats, taking the roll-on roll-off (RORO) ferry to Nusa Penida is a solid option too! The public ferry service runs daily at 10 am and 2 pm (except on Sundays when only the 10 am ferry operates) from Padang Bai Port. Usually, the boat rides take between 30-60 minutes.

When heading to Nusa Penida, remember that there can sometimes be a wait at the ports, up to an hour or so, depending on the sea conditions that day. You'll want to be prepared for the possibility of some delays or even cancellations if the weather is really bad.
But the nice thing about ferries is that they’re cheaper than booking a speedboat ticket. And you're even allowed to bring a scooter or motorbike with you onboard. So if you're planning to explore Nusa Penida by bike, the ferry might be the way to go.

    By tour package

    -
    • Journey duration: around 20 to 45 minutes
    • Average tour package cost: usually starts at around 580,000 IDR (54 AUD)
    • Pro: Once you pick your tour inclusions and book your day trip package, you’re all set. Everything is planned and structured for you so there’s less stress!
There are a lot of tour packages available online that include not only hotel pick-up and drop-off but also a private boat ride to and from the island. If you want a hassle-free day trip (without having to separately book all your rides and transfers), book a complete Nusa Penida Day Tour Package instead!
Klook Tip:  No matter which transportation option you pick, be prepared to pay an island entrance fee worth 25,000 IDR (2 to 3 AUD).

    Getting Around the Island

Private car charters with a driver
    -
Booking a private car charter to travel around Nusa Penida is a no-brainer if you’re a traveler who prioritizes flexibility. Most car charters can be booked for up to 8 hours and during this time frame, it’s totally up to you how you want to plan your itinerary. Your driver will be there to help you get around safely (taking photos and giving you all the best insider tips too!)
Some private car rental packages also let you pick which part of Nusa Penida you want to explore, whether that’s the western part of the island, the east, or both.
    -
If you don’t want to stress over both your itinerary and how you’ll get around the island, you can book an all-inclusive Nusa Day Tour package instead. Compared to a private car charter, a complete tour package lets you hand over the travel reins to your tour operator from the start of the day trip until you get back to your accommodation.

    Scooter rentals

Feeling a bit more adventurous? If you know how to ride a scooter, you’re over 18, and you have the requirements, you can also explore the island by renting out one. It’s actually a lot more budget-friendly too so that’s a big perk!
The rental requirements are simple. Just present your valid passport, a copy of your ID card or passport, and your driver’s license to the rental operator before receiving the scooter.

Things to Do on Your Day Trip

    1. Admire the views and take the best photos at Kelingking Beach

    -
Although not suitable for swimming, Kelingking Beach more than makes up for it by giving travelers the most stunning views of its famous t-rex-shaped clifftops and pristine blue waters. While you’re here, breathe in the fresh air and take advantage of the pretty views by capturing Instagram-worthy photos.
    -
You can even book a Nusa Penida private day tour with a photographer to help you take beautiful pictures against the renowned cliffside backdrop.
    -
Klook Tip: There’s also the option of trekking down to the beach but it's not for the faint of heart. If you’re up for the long descent and difficult trek back up to the cliff top, you have to come prepared. Make sure to bring enough water with you, wear comfortable sandals or shoes, and as much as possible, avoid hiking midday.

    2. Explore marine life and watch the sunset at Crystal Bay

Crystal Bay, located on the west coast of Nusa Penida, is known for its calm and clear waters and a 200-meter stretch of white sandy beach. As one of Nusa Penida’s top beaches, it's the perfect spot for swimming and watching the sunset. It’s also a popular destination for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts because of its rich marine life.
    -
Underwater, you’ll find vibrant corals and tropical fish like the famous Mola Mola (oceanic sunfish). If you’re lucky, you might even spot sea turtles!

    3. Take a dip in a natural infinity pool at Angel’s Billabong

    -
Located on the Southwestern coast of Nusa Penida, this wonder of nature boasts ocean-carved rock formations and an emerald-green natural infinity pool that will leave you in awe.
At low tide, Angel’s Billabong is perfect for a refreshing dip but high tide brings strong waves that make it too rough for swimming. Sometimes the pools are closed for safety, but even then, it’s a fantastic spot to enjoy breathtaking views of the ocean.
    -
This top tourist spot is just a 5-minute ride from Crystal Bay and a short walk from Broken Beach so if you have a chance, make sure to cross it off your Nusa Penida travel bucket list.
Klook Tip: Due to algae and seaweed, the rocks at Angel’s Billabong can be quite slippery. If you want to swim in the pool, wear water shoes to reduce the risk of slipping.

    4. Experience local culture at the Goa Giri Putri temple

    -
This hidden Hindu temple is situated in one of the largest caves on the Northeastern side of the island. It’s a sacred site that gives visitors a chance to see local customs and spiritual spaces.
Be prepared to get a little workout in since you’ll have to climb 100 winding steps to reach the temple cave, which is nestled halfway up a hill. When you arrive at the entrance, you’ll need to crawl through a small opening in the rock but once you’re inside, you’ll be amazed by the high echoing chamber of the 300-meter-long cave.
Klook Tip: Remember to show respect to local Hindu customs by dressing modestly or covering up with a sarong before entering the temple.

    5. Try thrilling water sports at the ESA-G Bar & Beach Club

    -
Thrillseekers are sure to enjoy the selection of water sports at the ESA-G Bar & Beach Club. From banana boats and parasailing rides to canoes and jetskis, they’ve got it all. Let lose and level up the excitement by adding water sports to your day trip itinerary. If you’ve got your friends or family with you, this could be a great bonding activity.
Once you’re on the island, don’t forget to try the ultimate Nusa Penida Watersport experience

    6. Swim at the beautiful Atuh Beach

The Eastern tip of Nusa Penida is home to one of its most beautiful beaches, Atuh Beach. This hidden gem is nestled between two high cliffs. And, to reach this lovely spot, you'll have to take a 10-minute walk down the stairs (trust us, it's super worth it!).
You’ll find that there are even a few cafes and restaurants here, allowing you to enjoy a cool refreshing drink or hearty meal by the beach.

    7. Spot manta rays and go snorkeling at Manta Bay

    -
If you’re feeling extra adventurous, try to visit Manta Bay early in the morning for the best chance to see manta rays. While you’re at it, go snorkeling and discover more of Nusa Penida’s biodiverse waters.
    -
There are a lot of snorkeling tours and private Nusa Penida speedboat tours available and they usually provide snorkeling gear too so you don’t have to worry about bringing your own.

    What to Bring

    Beach or swimming essentials

Since most of the activities you’ll be doing in Nusa Penida are water-related, don’t forget to bring beach and swimming essentials like your:
    • Swimwear
    • Sun protection (SPF lotion, hat, sunglasses)
    • Beach towel
    • Thongs/slippers
    • Change of clothes

    Sturdy footwear

    -
There’s a lot of trekking in Nusa Penida, especially when going down to the beaches. Make sure you’re wearing sturdy shoes or sandals with you to prevent slipping or tripping. It might also be good to pack an extra pair of water shoes if you want to swim in rocky pools like Angel’s Billabong.

    Waterproof bag and cellphone case

    -
From boat transfers and snorkeling tours to water sports and trips to the beach, there are many instances during your day trip where you’ll want to keep your stuff dry. Having a waterproof bag and cellphone case can be such a lifesaver since you won’t need to worry about accidentally getting them wet.

    Water and snacks

Remember to stay hydrated throughout the day. Bring a water tumbler with you so you can just easily refill your bottle along the different refilling stations throughout the island. Bringing a water tumbler with you is also a great way to stay eco-friendly since you won’t need to keep buying and throwing away non-reusable plastic water bottles.
Don’t forget to bring snacks as well so you can grab quick bites to stay energized throughout the day.

    Motion sickness tablets

Many people might feel motion sickness while riding the fast boats to and from Bali. If you easily get motion sickness, always be prepared with motion sickness tablets to avoid getting sick on the ride.
