But with so much to choose from and so little time, it’s important for you to plan your visit well to make your vacation as enjoyable as possible. Don’t know how to begin planning your itinerary? Then check out our list of recommendations for activities in and outside of London below:
Things to do in London
1. Enjoy picturesque views of London from The Shard
A massive 76-story skyscraper in the heart of the city, The Shard stands out from London’s skyline with its signature jagged peak and glass facade that reflects the sky and the city itself. The Shard, with its glass exterior, encapsulates London’s ever-changing nature, as its appearance changes day-to-day depending on the weather and its surroundings.
At the top, you’ll take in 360-degree panoramic views for up to 40 miles on clear days, where you can observe the city and its people for hours! Several bars and restaurants are also available at The Shard, and it’s recommended that you get a table by the window should you choose to dine during your visit so you can continue to take in the views during your meal.
Tickets for The Shard are dated and timed for your arrival only. You can stay at the top for as long you want once you’ve taken the lift.
2. Meet underwater creatures at SEA LIFE London Aquarium
Home to thousands of marine species such as jellyfish, starfish, and seahorses, the SEA LIFE London Aquarium is considered as one of the best things to do in London not only for families with children but also for animal enthusiasts! Here you’ll get to watch many different species as they swim around the large tanks, which are well-maintained and mimic natural habitats. You’ll even get to see the adorable penguins inside as they waddle around and play with their other penguin friends! If you’re feeling extra brave during your visit, you can give the Shark Walk a try, where you’ll walk over a glass platform suspended above the sharks swimming just inches beneath you, which will definitely be a moment you’ll never forget.
3. Marvel at the Gothic-style architecture of Westminster Abbey
History unfolds here at Westminster Abbey, a working church that’s several centuries old. As you approach it, you’ll witness the Abbey’s stunning white facade that mixes several architectural styles together. But though the church’s marvelous architecture alone is enough to wow most, there’s even more to see and be amazed by once you enter: intricately carved ceilings, colorful stained glass windows, and even a museum with wax effigies of royalty. Note that you are not allowed to take pictures once you enter the Abbey.
Tickets for Westminster Abbey must be booked prior to your visit. Try to book early to guarantee entry, as it is one of the most popular attractions in the city.
Things to do outside of London
1. Relive history at Stonehenge, Windsor Castle, and Bath
Escape the busy streets of London with this day tour to Stonehenge, Windsor Castle, and Bath, three historical places located in Southern England.
The tour’s first stop is Windsor Castle, just outside of London. Used as the official residence of the royal family, you’ll witness its grandiose interior as you walk through the state apartments and semi-state rooms, filled with priceless pieces such as paintings and sculptures.
Next up is the Stonehenge, a prehistoric monument made of huge stones transported all the way from Wales. During the shuttle bus ride to the stone circle, you’ll pass by burial sites that date back to the neolithic era. Once you reach the stones, you’ll spend some time walking around, taking souvenir photos, and reading about its history and archeological value. We recommended downloading the free audio guide on your phone and to read about the Stonehenge at the visitor center for more in-depth information.
The last stop of the tour is the city of Bath, a famous destination for rest and well-being since Roman times. Here you’ll explore the Roman Baths and learn about its history as you explore the various exhibits inside, before you reach the green pool of spring water at the heart of the baths. Make sure not to touch the water during your visit, as it is not treated for bathing - travelers can instead visit the Thermae Bath Spa on their own time should they wish to experience the waters of the Roman Baths.
Stonehenge tickets, Windsor Castle tickets, and Roman Baths tickets are included in the tour. You do not need to purchase them separately.
2. Sample fine wines at the South Downs
Nestled in the chalk hills of the South Downs National Park are south-facing vineyards that produce a variety of award-winning wines with distinct flavors produced by the local environment. During this tour, you’ll spend an entire day exploring the lush vineyards of the South Downs Area and learning about the winemaking process. The tour also includes a delicious lunch that consists of local specialties, where you can have a chat with the winemaker and ask about the intricate winemaking process.
3. Experience the world of magic at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London: The Making of Harry Potter
Considered as a must-try for any fan of the Harry Potter series, the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London: The Making of Harry Potter takes you through the elaborate filmmaking process for the famous movies. Get a chance to see original props, costumes, and film sets as you get bewitching details from the optional audio guide (available at an extra cost.)
