There are plenty of transportation options for getting around Tokyo and trains are pretty much a top choice. Most popular attractions are just near a train station, after all. With that, you can consider purchasing a public transportation pass like the Welcome Suica Card or the Tokyo Subway Pass to make transfers easier.
Here’s a breakdown of each to help you decide which suits your travel needs:

    Welcome Suica Card

The Welcome Suica is a prepaid IC card designed for visitors to Japan. It allows seamless travel across most public transportation in Tokyo, including trains, buses, and even non-subway systems like the JR Yamanote Line (which encircles Shibuya).
It can even be used for cashless payments at convenience stores, vending machines, and even some restaurants. This card is best for those who plan to explore beyond Tokyo’s subway network, including JR trains to destinations like Harajuku, Shinjuku, and Akihabara
It is also useful for visiting certain locations outside of Central Tokyo including Yokohama or Nikko.

    Tokyo Subway Pass

The Tokyo Subway Pass offers unlimited rides on Tokyo’s two main subway networks: Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway. You can easily access key destinations like Ginza, Asakusa, and Roppongi, which are well-connected by subway.
It comes in 24-hour, 48-hour, and 72-hour options, so this is a good bet for short-term sightseeing.  The Welcome Suica card, on the other hand, is valid for 28 days from the purchase date.  If your itinerary is packed with central Tokyo attractions and you prefer unlimited rides for a fixed price, you may prefer the Tokyo Subway Pass over the Welcome Suica card.

If you’re looking for options directly coming from Narita Airport (NRT) in Nagoya, our recommendations include the Narita Express, Keisei Skyliner, Narita Airport limousine bus, or a private car transfer
Coming from Haneda located closer to Tokyo? You can take the Tokyo Monorail, the Keikyu Monorail, the Haneda Airport limousine bus, or a private car transfer. For more details, we do a deep-dive in the blogs below:
