★ 4.9 (6K+ reviews) • 92K+ booked
Shirogane Blue Pond is named for its striking blue waters that can transform from light blue to deep turquoise, was formed as a result of a dam created at the Biei River. Located near the Shirogane Onsen hot spring town, Aoiike, as it's also known, derives its deep blue shade from natural minerals dissolved in the water. Over time, this Hokkaido Blue Pond has become a popular attraction, with an important role in protecting Biei from potential eruptions of Mount Tokachidake.

It's so easy to travel independently, so it's so convenient to use a package tour. Our guide, Lisa, is also very kind. She also easily informed us of the meeting time.

I was dissatisfied with being assigned to sit at the back as soon as I got on the bus, but the tour guide Onodera continued to care about my physical condition (because I am prone to motion sickness). I must indicate it when booking next time to protect my rights (I will not change my seat on site). Lunch is a buffet + small hot pot, which is delicious. Except for the seating arrangement, which is quite unsatisfactory, other aspects such as: itinerary arrangement and professionalism of the tour guide are excellent.

Autumn is considered the off-season in Hokkaido, but the maple leaves and the low-saturation scenery are also very beautiful! The tour guide was very patient in explaining, and overall it was great!

The itinerary is substantial, the scenic spots are beautiful, and the CP value is high. You can see more scenic spots in a limited time. If you come to Hokkaido, you can participate and experience it.

Must-Visit Attractions Near Shirogane Blue Pond

1. Shirahige Falls

Shirahige Waterfall, a part of the Blue River, adds to the Blue Pond's blue color. The water flowing through rocks creates a stunning 'white beard' effect, especially magical when frozen in winter. This waterfall supplies water to the pond, where aluminum from the surrounding cliffs mixes in. When the aluminum-infused water reaches the pond, it reflects sunlight specially, resulting in the beautiful blue hue of the pond.

2. Mt. Tokachi

Visit Mount Tokachi, a large and active volcano within Daisetsuzan National Park, which forms part of the Hyakumeizan and is popular for its loop trail, including the neighboring Mount Biei. You can also hike in Mount Biei to enjoy delightful terrain and breathtaking panoramas. If you have limited time, both mountains can be tackled individually as day hikes, taking approximately 6 hours round-trip.

3. Mt. Tomuraushi

Mt. Tomuraushi, a rocky peak along the Daisetsuzan trekking route, is the habitat of the endangered Japanese pika, a small furry creature known as an ice-age survivor. The stunning scenery and panoramic vistas can make you feel like you're in a different world away from Japan.

4. Daisetsuzan National Park

Daisetsuzan is Hokkaido's most expansive national park, protecting a mountainous region of wilderness that is larger than the size of some of Japan's smaller prefectures. This is the perfect spot for hikers, nature enthusiasts, deer, and brown bears alike. Plus, Daisetsuzan National Park is the initial spot in Japan to see the splendid transition of fall foliage and the first snow each autumn.

5. Shirogane Onsen

At the base of the Tokachi Mountain Range, this hot spring village gives you a spectacular view of the entire mountain range. Named "Shirogane Onsen," translating to "white gold" in Japanese, the hot spring was named after the successful discovery of a precious platinum-like source in 1950. When you drive down the picturesque Shirakaba Kaido (white birch road) extending about 4 km from downtown Biei, you'll arrive at this emotionally enriching hot spring retreat.
