Unmissable sights in Cairns

Known as the world’s gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, Cairns is the perfect destination for travelers seeking some sun and sea! Though the city offers a multitude of attractions on the water, such as snorkeling and visiting Fitzroy Island, it also has an endless variety of activities on land - for instance, you can check out the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway or Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park. With its luxury resorts & hotels, charming souvenir shops, cozy bars, and tour offices everywhere, you’ll never run out of things to do in Cairns.

Skyrail Rainforest Cableway

With its stunning views of the city and the rainforest, it’s no surprise that the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway is one of the top tourist attractions in Cairns. After you board your gondola, you’ll glide over toward the jungle’s canopy, where you’ll witness the majesty of one of the world’s oldest rainforests. The attraction also offers an audio tour through the app, an optional upgrade to a cable car with a glass floor, and a train ride back to Kuranda to see the rainforest up close.

Kuranda Scenic Railway

Travel in style by taking the Kuranda Scenic Railway, a unique rail journey that takes you through the Wet Tropics, a world-heritage rainforest that’s millions of years old! During the trip, you’ll enjoy the beautiful sights of nature as you pass by striking waterfalls tumbling into ravines and lush greenery teeming with wildlife. You’ll also get to know more about the rainforest and the railway’s history with the English commentary on-board. For the best experience, get a window seat for uninterrupted views.

Rainforestation Nature Park

Learn about Cairns’ local flora and fauna at the Rainforestation Nature Park! Located within the Kuranda forest, you’ll get to meet some of the country’s most popular animals like kangaroos, koalas, and crocodiles. You’ll also explore the rainforest with a guide aboard an authentic World War 2 Army Duck and witness indigenous Australians as they showcase a traditional dance, a spear presentation, and perform with the didgeridoo. An optional buffet lunch is also available at an on-site restaurant should you wish to try out some Australian cuisine.

Barron Falls

If you’re not sure what to do in Cairns during a day off, try visiting Barron Falls to see one of the most beautiful views in Australia! The falls can also be seen aboard the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway or the scenic train route, but you can also drive to the falls and explore the attraction’s walkways and glass-bottom viewing platform for a better view. Though the falls are spectacular year-round, it’s at its best during the wet season (November - March) when the falls are fuller.

Fitzroy Island

Take some time away from the city and enjoy the beauty of nature at Fitzroy Island, a tropical resort located only 45 minutes away from Cairns by ferry. Here you can spend the entire day snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters, where you’ll spot turtles and the wonderful coral of the Great Barrier Reef without any trouble. or choose to hike to the island’s lighthouse and summit for amazing 360-degree views. If you’re planning a lazy day, you can also lounge by the pool or have drinks at the bar.

Australian Butterfly Sanctuary

Discover facts about butterflies and their fascinating life cycles at the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, the largest butterfly aviary in the Southern Hemisphere! With educational exhibits, informative guided tours, and more than 1,500 butterflies roaming about, it’s a must-visit for any nature lover. Try to spot the different species that come in a variety of colors, such as the bright blue Ulysses and the green-and-yellow Cairns Birdwing. The sanctuary is also home to its very own lab, where you’ll get to observe the breeding process of the butterflies.

Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park

Learn all about Australian aboriginal culture at the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park, home of the Djabugay people and their cultural practices that date back to more than 40,000 years ago. Here you’ll witness a variety of demonstrations from the Djabugay, such as fire-making, spear and boomerang throwing, as well as dance and didgeridoo performances. You’ll also get to try out some interactive experiences like tasting Bush tucker, making jewelry, and learn about native plants used for medicine during the guided tour.

Esplanade

A boardwalk located in the heart of the city, Esplanade is a popular spot among both locals and tourists of all ages who wish to enjoy a day of recreational activities. Lined with trees and parks, the Esplanade is a perfect place for a stroll as you take in the view of the water. As you go along the boardwalk, you’ll also find exercise stations, designated areas for playing beach volleyball, and even a night market that sells some pretty cool stuff!

Barron Gorge National Park

Witness the beautiful scenery as you walk along the boardwalk of Barron Gorge National Park - from rugged rainforests to the diverse flora and fauna, you’ll never run out of things to marvel at here! During the wet season, the park becomes even more majestic as floodwaters make the Barron Falls even fuller, so visit from November to March if you can. During your visit, you can also try out a variety of activities like whitewater rafting and taking a dip in one of the swimming holes.

Cairns ZOOM and Wildlife Dome

Spend a fun day outdoors with a visit to Cairns ZOOM and Wildlife Dome, the world’s first challenge ropes course set inside a wildlife sanctuary. Highly recommended day trip that goes on a historic train to Karunda area. Takes two hours to get there from the Cairns train station which is located behind the Cairns Central shopping centre. Once you book, you need to get a physical ticket from the train station booth. Nice relaxing trip, bring water and snacks with you. Easily spend two to three hours in Karunda at the many markets there.

I highly recommended this tour, it was around 4 hours drive including return and stops, so we have more than 6 hours to explore. We visited many places like the cape, Trinity Beach, Daintree Rainforest, and the George. We also swam at the George and our tour guide is amazing who told us interesting information about the places we visited and shared with us interesting stories.

The ferry ride was a bumpy one due to weather conditions but eg crew members were very kind and helpful during the entire ride. Half day is only enough for one activity (glass bottom boat OR snorkelling OR check out the shorter hiking trail), if you would like to experienced the beautiful island to its fullest it’s better to book the full day return transfer.

A great day out! There are lots to do and look at in Kuranda and the Skyrail/Rail package is the perfect way to get there and back. We also really appreciated the complimentary hotel transfers - the driver was very informative and had lots of great tips to share. The day started with a 10:20 am pickup from our hotel and we then took the short 15 min drive out of town to the Skyrail Station. I recommend downloading the Skyrail app before jumping on, as it gives you a free audio tour as you travel above the rainforest in the Skyrail. The Skyrail stops twice, Red Peak and Baron Falls, where you can enjoy a short (couple 100m) boardwalk through the rainforest before continuing. You will arrive in Kuranda around 12:00-12:30 pm. This ticket also allows you to take your time exploring Kuranda before getting on the 3:30 pm train back down the mountain. The train is a slow tip with many great photo opportunities and running commentary along the way. A nice relaxing way to spend the afternoon. You will arrive at Freshwater Train Station around 5:00 pm where you will be met by your hotel transfer.
