From restaurants, cafes, and hotel, we give you our top places to work-from-anywhere in surf town.
Sun, sand, sea, and spreadsheets? If there’s one good thing to come out of this pandemic, it’s the fact that bosses now understand that their employees can be trusted to get work done wherever they are—allowing those who’ve always dreamed of it to finally start living their digital nomad dreams. And one of the go-to destinations for Millennials and Gen Zers who take their work from concrete jungles to wide, open spaces? The surfing capital of the north, La Union.
Many beach resorts in this surf town provide guests with a very good balance of picturesque surroundings and steady WiFi connections. The same goes for cafes and coffee shops in La Union. Aside from their tasty food and naturally cool, relaxed vibes—which make them destinations in their own rights—these establishments also serve as great spots for getting some work done (efficient right?).
In the spirit of making it easy for you to fully transition to becoming a digital nomad, we list down seven places in this famous surf town where you can go for both work and play on your next trip.
1. Kermit La Union
Originally from Siargao, Kermit is a local Italian restaurant that’s become really famous for its pizzas. But that’s not the only reason why they’re famous. Their cocktails, pasta dishes, pica-pica, and wine selections are equally noteworthy as well. And the great thing about this place is it offers a breathtaking view of the beach…and fast, reliable internet as well. The downside is that since it’s such an in-demand space with limited hours, it can get pretty packed easily. First timers take note! They are open from Tuesdays 4:00PM to 11:00PM and Wednesdays to Sundays from 11:30AM-2:00PM and 4:00PM to 11:00PM.

2. Masa Bakehouse
For locals and foreigners alike, Masa Bakehouse by Barefoot does not only serve breads (although, yes, judging by its name, it’s very easy to assume that). From Cruffins, Kamote Doughnuts to Shakshouka, Hummus and a Full Taglish breakfast, their food offerings are varied, delicious, fun, and all visually pleasing. They also serve really good coffee, which is one of the many reasons why it’s such a great place to go when you need to get work done, eat, and enjoy. They are open from Wednesdays to Sundays between 9:00AM to 5:00PM (yes, that’s a full work shift!).

3. El Union Coffee
El Union is undoubtedly one the most popular cafes in La Union and "the" surf shack to quench a caffeine craving after riding crazy waves. This quaint establishment’s coffee is so good that their beans are always sold out online. It’s a great spot for doing some writing thanks to its quiet yet energetic vibe, wall arts, (and of course, coffee!). Their Grilled Cheese, S’Mores and Horchata are an absolute must-try. They are open every day from 8:00AM to 6:00PM except on Wednesdays. This spot is also a stone's throw from Flotsam and Jetsam Hostel and other Elyu tourist spots.

4. Seawadeeka
Want to munch on some really good Asian food while you reply to your work emails? Then head on over to Seawadeeka where you can order things like Nasi Goreng, Banh Mi, all sorts of curry, Chicken Pandan, Pad Thai, and drinks like Kopi C and Thai Iced Tea. The space is very unassuming with options for bar sitting or occupying full tables. And what’s great is that they are open from 9:00AM to 10:00PM daily. Make the trip up north and visit San Juan beach for delicious food and even better island views!

5. Kabsat
Good food, great drinks and a breathtaking view of the surrounding area. These are what guests can expect when they visit Kabsat. They serve traditionally Filipino food and regional favorites in large portions. Think Kalderetang Tagalog and Pinakbet with generous slices of Liempo. They also serve all sorts of spirits and cocktails for those who can day drink while going through Gantt charts. For first timers, this spot is a great place to meet up with your party after a long drive! Needless to say, Kabsat makes sure to represent internet in La Union and represent it well.[2] Not only is it fast, it’s utterly reliable too.

6. Aureo La Union
If you’re headed to La Union for both work and play and haven’t finalized your hotel yet, we highly recommend Aureo. It is one of the few La Union beach resort and pool. This place is not your typical L.U. beach resort but definitely one of the most Instagrammable places in La Union. Every aspect of the property was really well-planned to give guests the type of experience they want, may it be quiet and relaxing or luxuriously vibrant. Internet is really stable too and all rooms have their own dedicated work area, but you may also opt to work poolside or beachfront by the waves. The only downside is that this place is located separately from all other popular establishments in surf town. But with the topnotch service, food, and direct access to spectacular San Juan waves, Aureo is also a great place to vacay!

Guaranteed to be your next favorite spot, this place marries art, music, and surf, and is also a great place for creative professionals thanks to its reliable WiFi , functional spaces, and distinct vibe. They also have a rooftop restaurant and bar for those who’d rather feel the La Union breeze while working both day and night.
