Binondo is one of the oldest sites in Manila that has witnessed wars and is also known as the first Chinatown in the world. Binondo was established in 1594 to separate Catholic Chinese from those who are from mainland China who aren’t practicing Catholics.

Today, Binondo is a well-loved place for those who are into food crawl or just want a taste of authentic and delicious Chinese cuisine. They’ve also kept the place alive with the vibrant colors and the Chinese influence from the Tsinoy community is evident.

Balikbayans will enjoy checking out traditional Chinese bakeries, street food, authentic Chinese dishes like dumplings, lumpia, and more.

One of the oldest streets in Manila, Escolta is still part of larger Binondo. The galleon trade between Chinese merchants and other local consumers started here and became one of Manila’s business districts.

Currently, Escolta is now a big remembrance from the past and a new culture (without totally erasing its history) thanks to the younger generations who started to appreciate its beauty. A balikbayan will truly feel the spirit of their homeland here.

When in Intramuros, every balikbayan will know about its historic sites but as we keep up with the times, more shops are popping left and right. Belfry Cafe is located at Manila Cathedral and since it’s named Belfry, they’re spotted in the part of where the cathedral houses the bells.

Balikbayan can enjoy their coffee directly below the bells and just marvel at its look while sipping coffee. The cafe makes sure the bells are not in use before opening their doors for customers.

Yes, there are tons of shopping malls abroad but why not try something unconventional? Greenhills Shopping Center will give mall goers a distinct shopping experience. It also has thrift stalls and the variety of choices is so wide, you can actually buy anything that your heart would desire when thrift shopping.

After walking around, take a rest and dine at restaurants with various cuisines around the establishment.

Another creative hub in Quezon City, Cubao Expo has been the home of many thrift stores, restaurants, shoe shops, and more. Cubao Expo is now known as a creative hub in the metro. Other events organized here are poetry reading, geek conferences, and indie music concerts. You can also see skaters and hipsters around. This is a must-visit for a balikbayan who wants to have a good time!
