We’re halfway through trying to keep up with (watching...) the incredible cyclists completing the Tour de France this year, and while admiring the French scenery is a definite bonus, maybe you’re also becoming a little bit inspired to take up your own cycling challenge… 🚴♀️
Unfortunately travel restrictions mean that many of us aren’t able to get out to France to watch or take part in the Tour de France this year, but have you considered doing the Great British equivalent?
Land’s End to John o’Groats is an iconic cycling route which traverses the whole length of Great Britain, taking you from the gorgeous beaches of Cornwall all the way to the stunning rugged Scottish scenery. The classic route follows greenways, cycle paths, and country roads, and for over three-quarters of its length it runs on the National Cycle Network. The total length of the journey is around 1,189 miles, or 1,913 kilometres, so it’s no easy challenge, and it takes most cyclists around 10-14 days to complete.
Fun facts
- Land’s End to John o’Groats is also called LEJOG, JOGLE or End to End
- The traditional route follows from south to north but it can be done in either direction (and defines whether it’s called LEJOG or JOGLE!)
Practical tips
- All-terrain bikes, touring bikes and hybrid bikes will manage fine when following this Land’s End to John o’Groats route
- Prepare for your ride and check your bike is in good condition
- There’s no definitive list of what to take with you, but remember you’ll need to pack gear for your bike, suitable clothing and toiletries including insect repellent for those pesky midges
Stunning scenery
