About Entopia Penang Butterfly Farm
Housed in a giant glass-house conservatory, Entopia Penang Butterfly Farm is where butterflies come out to play. Founded in 1986 as the Penang Butterfly Farm, it is the tropical world's first butterfly and insect sanctuary and has welcomed over 5 million local and international visitors over the years.
The butterfly park is a safe home to over 15,000 free-flying butterflies, an exciting assortment of insects and reptiles, as well as more than 200 species of flora. Entopia was once voted as one of the best destinations in Penang and remains one of the most popular family outing spots in the city.
Besides being a place for butterfly lovers to be surrounded by these beautiful fluttering creatures, Entopia also serves as a conservation, education, and research centre with its involvement in breeding programs and efforts to increase awareness on conservation issues with regards to the rainforest and butterfly habitats. Different Areas Within The Park
The Entopia Penang Butterfly Farm is basically divided into two main zones - an outdoor area called the Natureland, and an indoor area called the Cocoon.
The Natureland
The Natureland is essentially a living garden vivarium that was built with care to resemble the natural habitat of a variety of butterflies, invertebrates, and reptiles. It is home to 15,000 free-flying butterflies (consisting of up to 60 species, including some exotic and endangered ones!), frogs, koi fish, stick insects, turtles, as well as 200 species of plants and artistic garden features such as beautiful waterfalls, ponds, caves, vertical gardens, winding trails, and a mezzanine-terrace.
The design of Natureland is reminiscent of a smaller version of the iconic Flower Dome in Singapore's Garden by the Bay. Make sure you keep an eye out for the Home Tree, Natureland's iconic centerpiece and one of Entopia's main landmarks. Built with concrete and standing tall above the gardens, this place is usually filled with fluttering butterflies!
The Cocoon
The Cocoon is Entopia's indoor discovery centre that features two floors of learning exhibition, interactive edu-stations, and indoor activities that are perfect for the curious little ones. Visitors will get to learn about the life cycle of butterflies, marvel at state-of-the-art guided interpretations, and have fun at exciting attractions here including the Pandora Forest, Metamorphosis, Lumino City, Breeding Ground, and more.
There are plenty of interactive games, exhibits, and hands-on learning activities here to keep your children occupied for a few hours. The Cocoon is also air-conditioned, so it's extremely comfortable and great for escaping the heat! Another fun part of the indoor area is a Time Tunnel that lights up and changes colours as you walk through it. Pop by to take a photo for the 'gram!
Extra Visit Tips
- Give yourself ample time to explore all that Entopia has to offer, especially if you're visiting with children! You can easily spend about 3 hours here if you wish to go through all the exhibits and not rush through the place.
- Wear something light and comfortable for your visit, especially comfortable and sturdy footwear as you'll be walking around quite a bit (the entire Entopia pathway is 1.18km long).
- Butterflies love it when you wear red, orange, or yellow clothing, so if you're afraid of them, avoid these colours! Otherwise, dress in bright colours if you'd like to come up-close with your new friends.
- We'd recommend checking the weather forecast before your visit as Entopia is best visited on a bright, sunny day. If it starts to rain during your visit, you can always spend time in the indoor zone first!
- Pre-book your tickets on Klook to enjoy discounted rates of up to 20% off. Klook e-vouchers are instant confirmation (meaning you'll receive them immediately after placing your booking - you can even book right at the entrance or the morning of your visit!) and you can redeem your tickets easily by flashing your e-vouchers at the entrance.
- There are a variety of facilities within Entopia such as restrooms, nursing rooms, free wifi, a sick bay, a surau, souvenir outlet, restaurants, and a snack bar.
- Do note though that there are no lockers in Entopia, so you are encouraged to pack light and wear comfortable shoes so you can explore the park breezily! You may however choose to leave your non-valuables at the Information Counter located at the entrance.
- Outside food and drinks are not allowed in the park with the exception of food for infants and individuals with special needs. There is however a restaurant and snack bar located within the park for if you need a bite or a drink to quench your thirst.
- Check the official Entopia website for daily Nature Learning Activities so you can plan your visit schedule accordingly! These activities are conducted free-of-charge but on a first come first serve basis.
- Make sure you treat the facilities and wildlife around you with respect - don't pluck the flowers, feed the animals, disturb the exhibits, or litter while exploring the park. Smoking is strictly prohibited in the park and building.
