5. Shrimp roe noodles

9. Caldo verde

10. Minchi

Minchi, supposedly derived from the English word ‘minced’, is a simple dish of ground beef or pork that is seasoned with molasses and soy sauce and served with rice. The meat may sometimes be replaced with vegetables or fish as well, and this dish is said to taste best when chopped up with two cleavers by hand. This comfort food is the go-to choice for locals, and should be on your must-try list too!

11. African chicken

It might sound odd to be hunting for African Chicken in Macau, but trust us, the hunt is well worth it. Invented locally in the 1940s, the original chef unfortunately passed away without sharing the history behind the name of the dish. The barbecued chicken coated with a spicy piri-piri sauce is said to have a possible nod to Portugal’s Moorish past. Whatever the background, it certainly makes for a tasty meal.

14. Portuguese baked duck rice

This baked rice dish is drawn from a traditional recipe that hails from northern Portugal and is normally served on festive occasions such as Christmas and New Year. The duck is first cooked in a broth, before the flesh is removed and shredded. Following which, the broth is then used to flavour the rice.

15. Serradura

The name serradura directly translates to “sawdust” from Portuguese, which may not sound the most appealing. However, this unassuming pudding is anything but.
