Rediscover Pulau Ubin and the North-Eastern Coast of Singapore on this insightful and fun private boat tour
You may have been to Pulau Ubin numerous times. You may have even cycled around it and stayed over, but have you seen it from the sea? We recently joined Robin of Let’s Go Tour on his newly-curated Pulau Ubin & Kelong Private Boat Tour, and it sure was an insightful trip, exploring the island and the waters around!
See Punggol & Pulau Ubin from a different perspective
Our tour first started at Marina Country Club in Punggol, where we hopped on board a private boat that was comfy for a group of five together with our guide Robin for the trip. And it didn’t take long before he started the tour proper, showing us the newest housing developments that were right by the water edge, and also explaining how this narrow strait between Singapore and Johor actually works and how it has changed over the last couple of decades.
Soon, we were powering through the waters, enjoying the breeze and occasional sea spray on our faces. It’s not every day that we get to hit the high seas in style, and we were soaking in every moment of it. It wasn’t long before we got to Pulau Ubin, passing by the Outward Bound School and sailing along with kayakers on their own adventure.
This was when Robin started pointing out the flora and fauna we should be looking out for and brought us on what he coined as a “river safari adventure”. He sailed us through the mangroves and up a narrow river that ended up with huts where the familiar bumboats were repaired at. With good luck, you may even spot wild boars looking for food along the coast.
#KlookTip: This mini-adventure into the river is only available during high tide, so do consult the Internet before booking if you want to experience this!
Did you know that off the southern bank of Ubin sat Ketam Island? Well, we sure didn’t know until Robin brought us closer to this small island consisting mainly of mangroves. Lining it was also some kelongs that we got a closer look at as we sailed by.
Have a pitstop at an actual floating fish farm
As part of the tour, you’ll also get a pit stop at Smith Marine Floating Restaurant & Fish Farm, to understand how they go about their daily operations. Robin will also take the opportunity to share more about the types of seafood that can be found in the waters in this part of Singapore, as well as what the fish farms produce.
Before heading back on the boat, you can also grab a refreshing drink and relax alongside the cool sea breeze and astonishing views. You can always make another trip back to Smith Marine to enjoy a delicious meal of some of the freshest seafood you can find in Singapore!
Get up close to one of Singapore's last traditional kelong
Do you know what makes a kelong a kelong? Well according to Robin, there are three types of fish farms in Singapore - the traditional kelong, the modern floating fish farms, and the latest high-tech fish farms. On this tour, we’ll get to see all these three types to better understand how Singapore is working towards achieving the “30 by 30” goal of producing 30% of its nutritional needs by 2030.
While there are multiple highlights of this tour, the most insightful experience of the day has got to be the rich sharing by Robin, who after all, has spent the last 20 odd years boating and fishing around these waters. This private boat tour is definitely suitable for the entire family and deserving of its spot as one of the most unique and fun tours in Singapore!
