Swim with thousands of sardines at the famous Sardine Run in Moalboal!
Moalboal is home to many wonderful activities and things to do - scuba diving, canyoneering and beaches that could rival those of Boracay. But if we were to recommend one thing to do during your stay, it’s definitely a sardine run.
What exactly is a sardine run?
While sardine runs are also famous in South Africa, this natural phenomenon occurs year-round in Moalboal, Cebu as well. It’s particularly famous in Pescador Island, where you can quite literally swim with millions (or even billions!) of fish. Since sardines are filter feeders, they swim relatively close to the surface, so the experience would be accessible for non-divers.
The Sardine Run, also called the bait ball, is a natural phenomenon that happens when massive schools of sardines swim in the shallow waters to feed on planktons. They stick and swim together to protect themselves from larger prey and generally stay safe in the ocean. The sardines are so harmless that you can swim through them without getting grazed. And if you swim further up to 20-30 meters, you can see the colorful reefs filled with other vibrant creatures.
What makes this tourist attraction even more awe-inspiring is that the magnificent creatures are well protected, like the other natural spectacles on the island. Fishermen are prohibited from catching or herding these fishes, so tourists can experience this event in its raw and beautiful state.
They swim relatively close to shore, so first-time divers and snorkelers will get to experience this extraordinary event, too!
Experience the famous Sardine Run in Panagsama Beach
Just approximately 3 hours from Cebu City lies Panagsama Beach, a haven for backpackers and scuba divers worldwide. The location is absolutely perfect for diving and snorkeling as it has the most unbelievable reef drops just a few meters from the shore. And you won’t even need to rent expensive gear to experience the Sardine Run in Moalboal—all you need is some sunscreen and goggles, and you’re good to go.
Furthermore, you don’t have to dive too deep to find this once-in-a-lifetime experience under the sea because you can easily visit the schools of sardines just 30 meters off the coast of the famous Panagsama Beach.
We know swimming with these spectacular sardines can be fascinating, but you might want to keep your eyes peeled for small jellyfishes that sometimes get lost in that particular area where the sardines are. Ouch!
The best season to see the Sardine Run
Although this phenomenon can be seen all year round, it’s best to do so during the dry season, or from December to June, to get the best visibility underwater and in great weather conditions.
Some guidelines you need to know
There are several marine protection rules in place to keep the animals safe and comfortable, which also allows tourists to enjoy the natural beauty of the Sardine Run.
Taking unlimited photos underwater is allowed, but touching or harming the sardines, turtles, and other marine creatures is strictly prohibited. Violators of the said rules shall be given a municipal ordinance or administrative fine of P2,500 per person per violation.
To ensure the rules are being followed by locals and tourists, Bantay Dagat or watchers are deployed at these known tourist spots in Moalboal.
See the turtles, too!
Another phenomenal creature you wouldn’t want to miss while snorkeling are the sea turtles or pawikan. Several swims in the shallow waters to feed on seagrass and jellyfish that swim astray. So be sure to be on the lookout for those cute and majestic turtles while you’re there!
