Any visitor to Hong Kong will soon discover that there is a number one destination to enjoy that iconic Hong Kong view: The Peak. Your stay in Hong Kong would be incomplete if you don’t make the pilgrimage to the upper heights of the city and what’s the best way to get to the top? The Peak Tram of course!
Opened in 1888, the Peak Tram was originally built to carry residents up to the prestigious properties built at the top of the Peak. The funicular railway line is an incredibly steep route. As you make your way up you’ll experience the famed Peak Tram illusion – because of the angle, it’ll seem like the city skyscrapers are even more tilted than they are. The track originally made numerous stop offs along the way to deposit riders at their various residences on the way up but now the ride (almost exclusively for tourists) begins at the Peak Tram Terminus in Admiralty and ends on the top of the Peak. It’s arguably the only way to really experience Hong Kong so it’s not a surprise that the queue can get extremely long (see here for more on that).
The tour begins at Exit K of Central MTR Station – it’s a bit of a walk so allow time to make it there in plenty of time. On exiting you’ll immediately spot the group of eager tourists and the guide holding a ‘Klook’ sign. It’s a 10 minute walk to the Peak Tram Terminus but along the way the very enthusiastic guide shares tidbits of interesting facts: the feng shui of the HSBC building, the architectural history of the Bank of China Tower and some cultural customs included.
On arrival at the Peak Tram Terminus we all felt like we were getting celebrity treatment as we bypassed the whole ticketing line and headed straight for the special Klook line (saving over an hour of waiting). This special line slots in on the left side of the regular queue meaning we could all position ourselves near the tram doors and get first dibs on the best seats for sightseeing (Tip: choose a seat on the right hand side, you’ll get an unobstructed view of the city!)
At the top, our guides pointed us in the direction of the Sky Terrace and handed over the tickets. Everyone who bought the 4-in-1 combo including Madame Tussauds or HK Trick Eye 3D Museum also got given tickets for these then we were left to our own devices.
After what seemed like an endless number of escalators, we finally reached Sky Terrace 428 at the top of the iconic semi-circular construction on the top of the Peak. The unobstructed views across the whole of Central Hong Kong and across Victoria Harbour to Kowloon are truly a sight to behold. A free audio guide is given to you at the entrance to you can learn about what you’re viewing as you see it.
Tip: visit just as the sun is setting to see the changing view go from day to night
