Your Essential Guide to The Queenstown Gondola and Luge

The Queenstown Gondola, also called the Skyline Queenstown, is a cable car which takes guests up from the base of Bob’s Peak Mountain, all the way up to the top. Established in the 1960s, the gondola has been one of the most popular things to do in Queenstown since its inception. 

Once at the top of the peak, it’s easy to see why the gondola has been so popular for so many years. Unobstructed views of snow-capped Remarkables ski mountains, as well as Lake Wakatipu, await visitors who make the 450m journey to the top. 

Fun fact: the Queenstown Gondola is the steepest cable car in the Southern Hemisphere! 

The cable car up to Bob’s Peak certainly isn’t the only thing travellers can enjoy when they visit the Queenstown Gondola. In fact, the area has turned into a sort of experience hub, with lots of activities for travellers to enjoy. Below are some of the other activities available in the Skyline precinct.

Of course the first thing you’ll do at Queenstown Skyline centre is the cable car, or Gondola, itself. The Gondola will take you from the base of the peak, all the way to the top on what is an incredibly scenic journey.

Opening times: The Gondola is open daily from 9am, with the last trip from the ground being at 9pm. The Gondola operates daily, year round. 

Cost: AUD 43 for an adult return ticket

Suitable for all ages, this gravity fuelled race track is an absolute must-do when visiting the Queenstown Skyline. Guests sit onboard purpose built luge carts, which carry them down a winding 800m track, consisting of turns, dips, and tunnels.

The fun doesn’t only have to last one round, you can purchase multiple trips down the Luge track and simply take the skyline gondola back to the top each time you get to the bottom. Trust us, you’ll want to have another go after your first trip down this incredible track. And did we mention the view you’ll have?

Another incredible activity to do at the top of Bob’s Peak is stargazing. You will be taken on a 60 minute tour by knowledgeable guides who will introduce you to some of the star constellations visible from the peak, and you will then have the opportunity to use high powered telescopes to see the mystery of the cosmos for yourself. For those looking some thing to do on a clear night in Queenstown, this is absolutely it. There are facilities for both indoor and outdoor stargazing, so no matter the weather, you will be able to experience a truly phenomenal view of the galaxy.

After you’ve done your stargazing, you are then offered a complimentary cup of home-made hot chocolate in the Stratosphere bar - the perfect way to cap off what will no doubt have been an extraordinary night under the stars.
