The open concept zoo covers 110 acres of land and is dedicated to conservation, recreation, education, and research of a wide variety of animal and plant species including endangered and exotic species such as orangutans, Malayan Tigers, tapirs, and more.
The zoo is not only a must-visit for tourists visiting Kuala Lumpur (especially if you're an animal lover or if you're travelling with kids!) but is also a popular weekend and school holiday outing spot amongst Malaysians. Check out our visit guide and plan your perfect visit to Zoo Negara!

Planning your visit
Zoo Negara is pretty huge - you can spend a whole day here if you're planning to check out all the different exhibits. Save the above map (or get a paper copy at the zoo entrance) to navigate the space easily. Be sure to allocate enough time during your visit so you don't have to rush through the exhibits. Keep reading for more visit tips to plan your visit accordingly.
Must-visit exhibits
With over 5000 specimen from close to 500 different species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish, Zoo Negara is divided into a good selection of zones housing different animals. Here are some must-visit exhibits to add to your visit itinerary:
Giant Panda Conservation Centre
The Giant Panda Conservation Centre is one of the most popular exhibits at Zoo Negara! Xing Xing and Liang Liang are a pair of adorable giant pandas that were sent to Zoo Negara as a symbol of diplomatic relationship between China and Malaysia. They will live at Zoo Negara for 10 years before returning to China in 2024, so be sure to visit them before they're gone! Watch them laze around and munch on bamboo shoots in a well-maintained enclosure.
Ape Centre
Located at the highest point of Zoo Negara, the Ape Centre is another popular exhibit in Zoo Negara. It houses a group of chimpanzees and two species of orang utans, the Bornean orang utans and Sumatran orang utan. The open-concept enclosure at the Ape Centre allows the apes to roam around freely - watch them play with each other cheekily, kiss, shake hands, bicker, and tease each other while surrounded by lush greenery.
Bird Aviary
Another must-visit at Zoo Negara, the zoo's Bird Aviary has one of the biggest collection of birds species in the country, including endangered species that are hard to come by elsewhere. Watch our vibrant feathered friends chirp cheerfully as they fly around freely in a huge cage. The Tunku Abdul Rahman Lake is located just next to the Bird Aviary and is home to over 300 free-roaming birds including painted storks, elegant swans, pelicans, ibises, and more. Pop by during their feeding time to snap some great photos!
Humboldt Penguins
The 8 adorable Humboldt penguins at Zoo Negara have travelled a long way from the chilly Czech Republic Zoo to the tropical rainforest of Zoo Negara as part of the zoo's captive breeding programme. Pop by during their daily feeding time at 11AM and watch them 'fly' underwater with their strong flippers in search of food!
Bear Complex
Out of 8 species of bears in the world, Zoo Negara is home to 3 of them: the Asiatic Black Bear, Brown Bear, and the Malayan Sun Bear. Our personal bias is definitely the adorable Malayan Sun Bears, the smallest of the world's eight bear species! Fun fact: the Sun Bears are also known as Honey Bears due to their love for honey, and Dog Bear because of their size. They walk with their legs turned inward and have cute canine teeth that stick out a bit between their lips.
Cat Walk
Keep an eye out for the black and orange stripe mural on the ground - you'll know that you're approaching the Big Cats' territory once you see it! The Cat Walk is not home to your friendly domesticated felines but houses big cats such as the African Lions and Malayan Tiger in an open exhibit. You'll likely see them swimming in the pool on a sunny day or sleeping beneath a shady tree.
Children's World
If you're visiting with your little ones, be sure to pop by the Children's World section where kids can run around freely while surrounded by gentle animals such as deer, goats, rabbits, tortoises, and miniature horses! There's also a mini cave here where they can go on an educational journey and marvel at unique artifacts on display. #KlookTip: drop by between 12PM - 1PM if you're visiting on a weekend or public holiday for the animal feeding session at Children's World!
Mammal Kingdom
The zoo's Mammal Kingdom is a large area full of nocturnal animals including leopard cats, pumas, raccoons, hyaenas, capybaras (the world's largest rodent!), Malayan porcupines, and more. There's also a separate exhibit here where you can catch sight of some camels. If you're a photography enthusiast, you'll get to take lots of good shots of majestic mammals in this area.
Savannah Walk
Located next to the Mammal Kingdom, the Savannah Walk is the largest open-concept exhibit in the zoo as well as one of the most popular areas here! It is a home shared by a variety of African animals such as giraffes, ostriches, zebras, white rhinos, Sable antelopes, and more. Prep your camera for some photos with these majestic creatures that will fascinate all animal lovers, young and old.
Malaysian Elephants
Zoo Negara is home to some gentle giants, three Malaysian Elephants affectionately called Siti, Sibol, and Teriang. The elephants originate from Pahang and are popular superstars in the zo! Visit their exhibit and hand-feed them their favourite foods - sugarcane or bananas. Fun fact: did you know that Malayan Elephants can eat up to 300kg of food and drink up to 225 litres of water per day? That's pretty incredible and impressive if you think of it!
Other exhibits
Besides the above exhibits, there's also a Reptile House, Butterfly Garden, an Australian Plain (housing a group of adorable wallabies, kangaroos, and emus - Australia's largest bird!), and even a Hornbill Centre, a special area that serves as a breeding centre for 7 species of hornbills. Take your time and go through the different zones in Zoo Negara for a fun and fulfilling day with the wildlife here.
Extra visit tips
- The Zoo Negara is huge and most of the areas here are unfortunately unshaded to mimic the natural habitat of the animals. Make sure you pack accordingly as the sun can get pretty unforgiving on a hot day - bring along a cap, an umbrella, as well as enough water to keep you and your family hydrated throughout your visit! Keep an eye out for the number of Zoo Huts (including some air-conditioned ones) scattered around the zoo where you can pop in for a break when you get tired.
- Pre-book your Zoo Negara tickets on Klook to enjoy discounted rates! Tickets are open-dated, instantly confirmed, and you'll even earn Klook Credits that can be used for extra discounts when you plan your next adventure.
- The zoo is wheelchair and stroller-friendly - you can even rent a wheelchair or stroller if you need one, rental fee is RM5 and RM20 respectively.
- We highly recommend packing light as you'll be walking around a lot at the zoo! If you need to store your personal belongings, there are lockers available for rental at a fee of RM2, available at the Ticket Counter.
- If you need to conduct your prayers, there's an air-conditioned prayer room near the zoo's main entrance.
- Wear comfortable footwear for your visit if you don't want your feet to hurt! There are also trams that run around the zoo that you can hop on if you get tired of walking. Purchase a tram pass at the tram counter if you'd like to make use of the tram system.
- Don't worry if you get hungry, replenish at one of the restaurants in the zoo that serve a variety of food and beverages at affordable prices. Pop by the Mane Delicious for some refreshing ais kacang if you're melting under the sun, or the Panda Cafe for delicious nasi lemak or curry mee for lunch! Check out the map of the zoo for the exact locations of these restaurants to plan your visit accordingly.
- Check the Zoo Negara official website for the multi-animal show featuring sea lions or macaws! There are limited seats for these shows, so make sure you head over to the Animal Show stage early to secure a good seat.
