Nijo Castle is a famous castle in Kyoto, Japan, that used to be home to the Tokugawa shoguns. It was built in the early 1600s by Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. One of the best parts to see inside is the Ninomaru Palace, known for its beautiful wall paintings and "nightingale floors" that make chirping sounds when you walk on them to warn guards of intruders. But there's more! When you visit Nijo Castle, make sure to check out the Ninomaru Garden. It's a gorgeous garden with a big pond and carefully arranged rocks. The Honmaru Palace and the rest of the castle grounds are also fascinating, giving you a peek into the grand life of feudal Japan. Surrounding the castle is a wide moat and huge stone walls, which make it look even more impressive. There are also two traditional tea houses where you can enjoy a real Japanese tea ceremony. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Nijo Castle hosts various cultural events and exhibitions throughout the year. Visiting this Japanese castle offers a unique opportunity to step back in time and learn about an important part of Japan's history.

It was totally worth going there! No need to worry about anything! just sit back, listen to Jay's jokes (and instructions), and take some photos or videos! I highly recommend renting a bike in Amanohashidate and also trying the free bike rentals in Ine Funaya (just check with Tourist Information, you only need a 2000 yen deposit). Once again, having Jay as our guide was awesome!!

How sweet it is that you can as they call it hop on hop off at any stop and enjoy the surroundings. It was so hot but we had the opportunity to be seated in the bottom part of the double decker bus so had some relief from the heat, bring lots of water and items to keep you cool, otherwise just enjoy the history of the shrines and temples and shopping at the Nishiki market.

first of all i would like to leave some words for the super kind and caring guide sofia, hoping my message show how we had a wonderful day trip with her, the tour guide sofia waited for us at morning for like 10 minutes without complaining.. she gave us an explanation about each place we had to visit during the day, what makes the places worthy to visit .. she took care about each one of the guest to not get lost in the area .. she gave us enough time to hangover and to explore the area.. even she heard our confusion as first day in japan… now i give my opinion regarding the trip, for sure i was amazing no tiredness and it includes a very unique places. it was worthy to visit and worth money. i attached some photos of today’s trip.

we didn’t expect a full tour with this mainly because it was our first time in japan and we had a toddler but we did visit all three locations and took photos however as expected it wasn’t enough time to visit ninenzaka and fushimi inari. the bus driver allowed us to bring a stoller on the bus and the tour guide was always easy accessible on whatsapp. overall satisfied

So, the itinerary is a bit intense, especially so in 38°C heat, but overall it was well worth it. The stop at Kiyomizu-Dera is definitely my highlight, as you first get to walk the street and check all the shops yourself, and then the views at the temple are stunning. The other stops were great photo opportunities too. The guide was so lovely and her English was pretty good, she told us a lot of interesting facts, and seemed very organised.

We took a private tour with Katsuhiko (Katsu), and his English was impeccable. Having grown up in the area, he had incredible local knowledge and truly went above and beyond for us. We visited all the sites listed, and Katsu made the experience unforgettable. Despite us running a little late, he patiently waited and even took us to a lovely French café, Chasen, in Shimokawaracho, where we enjoyed a delicious matcha cream cheese cake. I highly recommend booking a private tour with Katsu—he’s one of the best tour guides we’ve had in Japan!
