Daigoji Temple is a cherished World Heritage Site located on the slopes of Daigo-san Mountain in Kyoto City. Known as the "Temple of Flowers," this historic site dates back to 874, when the iconic Godai Hall was erected by the revered Buddhist monk Shobo. As you explore the main temple grounds at the mountain's base, you'll find a serene hiking trail leading to several world heritage buildings, including the notable five-story pagoda, Goju-no-to, which miraculously survived the tumultuous Onin War in the 1400s. Don't miss the annual cherry blossom feast held on the second Sunday of April, paying tribute to the legendary viewing party hosted by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1598 as a gesture of rebuilding following the war.

The lovely tour guide Lily explained the itinerary in Chinese and English. It was very interesting to feed the seagulls at Ine Funaya. Watching the seagulls and eagles eating shrimp crackers is a very beautiful fishing village. In the afternoon, taking the chairlift up the mountain at the Amanohashidate is a highly recommended itinerary! It’s a pity that we must go on rainy and sunny days!

It's great but if you're late for a couple of minutes, they will leave you so you have to be very mindful of the time.

Exiting experience feeding the seagull while boating around Ine Funaya, thereafter going up Amanohashidate with the chair lifting was nice although the rain spoil the views. Is a long journey from Osaka but good to join Klook as we do not need to worry about the transportation and our tour guide Lily is good taking care of our fares for the boat and chair lifting rides, thus we can just enjoy without queue

Guide Hu is very humorous and there were laughs along the way. The scenery is beautiful and we were not in a hurry. It was my first time to participate in the tour group and left a good impression. I will come again if I have the chance!!

What to see in Daigoji Temple

Sanboin

As you enter the main temple grounds, your eyes will be drawn to the exquisite Sanboin. This elegant structure, once the residence of the head priest, traces its origins back to 1115. A remarkable blend of history and beauty, the current building and its stunning landscape garden were revamped in 1598 for Toyotomi Hideyoshi's iconic cherry blossom viewing party. See the opulent Momoyama architecture in all its glory and make sure to explore this timeless gem during your visit.

Shimo Daigo

Visit the Shimo Daigo (Lower Daigo) section, home to many of the temple's significant structures. One of these is the Kondo Hall, also known as the main hall. Although the current building was relocated to Daigoji in 1599, it houses the temple's principal object of worship---a revered seated statue of the Yakushi Buddha.

Another highlight in the Shimo Daigo area is the impressive 38-meter-tall, five-storied pagoda, recognized as Kyoto's oldest verified building. Established in 951, this pagoda is a rare survivor of the recurring fires that have swept through Daigoji over the centuries, giving you a glimpse into the ancient architectural legacy of the head temple.

Bentendo Hall

Located by a pond at the far end of the Shimo Daigo area, this picturesque hall at Daigoji is a favorite spot for photographers. The charming setting is particularly enchanting when surrounded by the vibrant autumn hues in late November.

Reihokan Museum

Located on the main temple grounds at the mountain's foothills, this elegant treasure house at Daigoji showcases the temple's extensive collection of historical artifacts such as statues, documents, and paintings. Decorated with some of the temple's most stunning weeping cherry trees, the museum's garden typically bursts into bloom in early April, offering a delightful sight for visitors.

Kami Daigo

Head to Kami Daigo (Upper Daigo), Daigoji's original temple grounds located at the mountain's peak. The one-hour forest trail climb leads you to peaceful wooden halls along the mountainside and stunning views of the Osaka plain on clear days.

Tips for Your Daigoji Temple Visit

When is the best time to visit Daigoji Temple?

Plan your visit during the spring season for cherry blossom viewing or in late November for vibrant autumn colors. Arrive early in the day to avoid crowds. Exploring Kami-Daigo, the less-visited upper part of the temple complex, can also provide a more peaceful experience.

How to get to Daigoji Temple?

You can reach Daigo ji Temple, Kyoto, Japan, with ease by taking a short bus ride from Daigo Station or utilizing the convenient public transportation network from JR Kyoto Station. Consider the community bus number 4 for a hassle-free journey. Alternatively, the metro is also a good option, with a 10-minute walk from the nearest stop.
