Phra Achana Buddha Image
The Phra Achana is the largest Buddha image in Sukhothai, standing 15 meters high and 11 meters wide. This serene Sukhothai style image, housed in a roofless mondop, is partly visible from the outside through a diminishing opening. The right hand of the image is adorned with gold leaf, placed by devotees.
Mondop
The mondop, a cube-shaped structure built in the late 14th century by King Maha Thammaracha II, is a marvel of ancient architecture. With a square base of 32 meters and walls 3 meters thick, this structure once featured a wooden gable or saddle roof. Visitors can explore the narrow staircase within the southern wall, leading to the roof for a panoramic view.
Jataka Engravings
Inside the mondop, discover over 50 slate plates engraved with scenes from the Jataka tales, depicting the previous lives of Buddha. These engravings are the oldest surviving examples of Thai drawing art and offer a fascinating insight into the spiritual and artistic traditions of ancient Sukhothai.
Cultural and Historical Significance
Wat Si Chum, translating to 'Temple of the Bodhi Tree,' holds immense cultural and historical value. An ancient stone inscription found here provides insights into the founding of the Sukhothai Kingdom. The temple's viharn, though mostly in ruins, adds to the site's historical charm.
Architectural Marvel
The mandapa at Wat Si Chum is an architectural marvel with its thick walls and intricate engravings. The narrow staircase passage within the mandapa, leading to the roof, is a unique feature that adds to the site's mystique.
Engraved Slates
Discovered within the mandapa's passage, the engraved slates depicting scenes from the life of Buddha are the oldest surviving examples of Thai art of drawing. These slates provide valuable insights into the artistic and cultural practices of the Sukhothai era.
Local Cuisine
While exploring Sukhothai, don't miss out on the local cuisine. Popular dishes include Sukhothai noodles, a flavorful blend of rice noodles, pork, and a tangy broth, and Khao Perb, a unique rice noodle roll. These culinary delights offer a taste of the region's rich gastronomic heritage.
