Wenwu Temple

Wenwu Temple offers the most iconic view of Sun Moon Lake with its orange roofs set against the lake's backdrop. This large, imposing structure is built in the palace style of northern China and is guarded by two enormous vermilion lions. The temple houses gods related to both civil and martial affairs.

Culture and History

Sun Moon Lake has been inhabited by the Thao aboriginal tribe since the Qing Dynasty. The Thao mythology tells of hunters who chased a white deer to the lake and decided to settle there. Visitors can observe authentic Thao dance performances at the Kalapaw Thao Tribe Performance Center.

Local Cuisine

Ita Thao village is the best place to experience local and aboriginal Taiwanese street foods. Must-try dishes include boar meat, bamboo tubes of sticky rice, and millet wine. Sun Moon Lake is also famous for its black tea, which can be enjoyed in various forms, including ice cream and beer.
