Did you know that you don’t have to travel far from Sydney for a fun winter adventure?
Only just under an hour’s drive away from the city, the Blue Mountains is a fantastic destination during the chilly season.
But you might be wondering: does it snow in the Blue Mountains? While the area may be known for its iconic rock formations surrounded by lush greenery, you can also see snow-covered panoramas and have snowball fights with the entire fam during the cold winter months.
However, there isn’t snowfall in the entire region and in certain places it can be quite sporadic. Lucky for you, we’ve done all the research and put together this list of places with the best chance of snow:
- Blue Mountains National Park
- Wentworth Falls
- Katoomba
- Lithgow
- Blackheath
- Oberon
- Jenolan Caves
1. Blue Mountains National Park
The Blue Mountains National Park isn’t just a UNESCO World Heritage site, it also transforms into a winter wonderland during the chilly months. The towering trees covered by snow make a pretty backdrop as you snap photos, make snowmen, and go camping (just make sure you have enough warm clothes!).
Before you pack your bags and toboggans, make sure you check the latest Blue Mountains snow forecast since the area usually only gets five days of snow.
To make the most out of your stay in the area, head to the Blue Mountains Scenic World and enjoy a prime viewing experience from the top. With just a single pass, you can ride the steepest passenger railways in the world, see the Jamison Valley from aboard a cable car, and see the Katoomba Falls and the Three Sisters along the skyway.
2. Wentworth Falls
It doesn’t always snow in Wentworth Falls but when it does, it’s absolutely postcard-worthy. Snow-capped rooftops and gardens all around the town make for incredible scenery. Locals enjoy the occasion by taking part in snowball fights and taking out the toboggan for a fun slide down the slopes.
Take advantage of your time away from the lights of the big city and go stargazing! Meet up with the expert guide at the Wentworth Falls Picnic Area and head to the best spot to see the dark sky. With a professional-grade telescope, you’ll be able to spot constellations and even Saturn’s rings.
3. Katoomba
When it comes to snow in the Blue Mountains, Katoomba is one of the places to be. Katoomba has enjoyed great snowfall in the past few years and if the trend continues, there’s a good chance of more snow for the coming winter seasons as well. Make sure you bring your warmest jackets and gloves to enjoy the weather!
Keen to see a new side of the Blue Mountains? Go on a wombat adventure tour, where you’ll be taken to the mountain range’s best hidden spots aboard an ex-Australian Army 4WD Land Rover. To make your time in Katoomba even cooler, visit the Lost City rock formations and a tunnel that’s illuminated by glow worms.
4. Lithgow
Another town that receives its fair share of snow in the Blue Mountains is Lithgow. In fact, the town enjoyed two snowfalls in 2021 so you and the rest of the family can make snow angels and snow forts at Queen Elizabeth Park!
Note: roads may also be closed during heavy snowfall.
5. Blackheath
While snow in the Blue Mountains isn’t guaranteed, Blackheath is one of the places with the best chances of snow every year thanks to its high location. On the right day, you can see the town turn into a snowy paradise. Stop by one of the town’s many parks, like Sutton Park, to see trees and plants blanketed by snow
Looking to keep warm under the cold weather? Try a tasting paddle at Bilpin Cider Co for a tasty drinking experience in town. You can pick four out of the 11 varieties available. Not a drinker? No problem, there are also options for non-alcoholic bevvies.
6. Oberon
No list about Blue Mountains snow is complete without mentioning Oberon. It may be further out west in the Greater Blue Mountains area, but it has rightfully gained a reputation for snow over the years. The town typically enjoys three to four snow falls every year, so it’s a must-visit if you really want to see snowflakes and play winter games. There’s even a hill at the town that’s perfect for sledding!
While you're in Oberon make sure to check out Mayfield Gardens, one of the largest cool climate gardens in the world.
7. Jenolan Caves
There’s more to see in the Jenolan Caves than just the limestone caves themselves (although, they truly are incredible). The area also enjoys a decent amount of snow when the weather is just right. The trees and roads look paper white, creating a beautiful backdrop.
Special thanks to Blue Mountains Mums and Blue Mountains Australia for these fun winter ideas and weather info!
