A step-by-step guide on sanitising mangoes
The mango season is in full swing and we are feasting on them like it's a celebration! And while we (of course) want you to continue doing that, it's important to take a minute and think — Am I washing fruits and vegetables the right way?
So, take a look at how we personally like to clean mangoes during the coronavirus pandemic.
Note: We aren't health experts like the FSSAI, and there are more than one way to wash fruits and vegetables.
1. Use a cardboard box to carry mangoes
First, use a cardboard box to carry your mangoes back home from the market. Cardboard boxes give a little more coverage than most bags, and can be wiped easily with a tissue and sanitiser.
2. Wash your hands
What gets rid of coronavirus? Washing your hands! Well, at least it's a precaution.
And so, even before you clean fruits and vegetables, make sure your hands are washed thoroughly.
3. Place the mangoes in water and salt
While there's no proof that washing vegetables and fruits in water and salt can kill the virus, there's no harm in taking extra care, right? Besides, both these ingredients can be easily digested.
What we like to do is, soak the mangoes in large containers filled with water and salt for at least half an hour.
4. Lay mangoes out in the sun
Some people also like to lay out those piles of mangoes out in the sun before taking them in. It's said that the sunlight helps get rid of the coronavirus.
5. Wash mangoes for 20 seconds
It's also said that you should wash fruits and vegetables for as long as you wash your hands. So, clean the mangoes for 20-25 seconds in water.
Additionally, some people prefer using a gentle scrubbing brush.
6. Don't use soap to clean fruits
Haven't we all made the mistake of washing vegetables and fruits with soap? Well, if you still are, stop!
If you think you are sanitising vegetables and fruits with any kind of detergent to get rid of coronavirus, chances are the soap is sticking to them, getting consumed by you and ultimately giving you health problems.
7. Store mangoes in the refrigerator
Once washed and cleaned, store your mangoes in the refrigerator, preferably in a designated spot away from any packaged food items.
This way you can cool the mangoes and keep them safe from any germs that maybe lingering on other food in your fridge.
8. Bonus: How to cut mango EASILY
- Start slicing the mango
- If you feel the seed, move the knife a little away
- Take the slices one by one and start making cross or hashtags around them
- Once done, simply pop the mango
- Cut the mango cubes off the skin
