Thanks to Netflix and the success of Money Heist, the production budget has helped the filmmakers shoot in international locations for Money Heist Season 3 and 4, while the first two seasons were primarily filmed in Madrid, Spain.
So, if you’re curious to know where Money Heist was filmed (in Spain and around the world), keep reading! We’ve compiled 11 filming sites you can visit once the lockdown is lifted.
WARNING: Spoilers ahead!
1. Spanish National Research Council as the Royal Mint of Spain
For security reasons, filming outside the actual Royal Mint is strictly prohibited. However, the Spanish National Research Council’s exteriors resemble the Royal Mint, making it a perfect alternative.
As for the interior shots and scenes, those were filmed in Colmenar Vijeo, Madrid.
2. ABC Printing Site in Torrejon de Ardoz as the Royal Mint’s printing room
Equipped with big and heavy-duty machines, ABC’s printing site was the perfect location for Nairobi to conduct her money-printing workshops, and print out billions of euros in the series!
3. Finca El Gasco, Torrelodones as La Casa de Toledo
Remember La Casa de Toledo where the heist was planned? Did you know it is actually a rental place where wedding banquets are usually held! The charming house surrounded by a rustic garden in Money Heist is called Casa Palacio and has no less than 11 rooms, 5 bathrooms, and kitchen, which makes it the perfect venue for special occasions.
4. Callao Square, Madrid
In Money Heist season 3, we see over 140 million euros literally fall from the sky towards a sea of people. This scene was filmed in Callao Square in Madrid, where you’ll also see the big screens that our beloved Professor used to announce Rio’s illegal detention.
5. Ministerio de Fomento (Ministry of Public Works and Transport) as the Bank of Spain
Also, the team used the exteriors of the Ministerio de Fomento headquarters as the Bank of Spain. As for the interior shots, these were filmed at Netflix's very own studio located in Tres Cantos, Madrid.
6. San Frutos Hermitage as the Italian Monastery (Exterior Shots)
Berlin, Palermo and the Professor plot to rob 90 tons of gold from the Bank of Spain at an Italian Monastery where Berlin pretends to work on his theology thesis. This scene was filmed in the San Frutos Hermitage, which we see later again in Money Heist as the gang’s new headquarters, where they prepare for the heist.
7. Abbadia De Parraces as Italian Monastery (Interior Shots)
Berlin’s wedding, the gang's roundtable discussions, and all their other notorious activities were all shot right here! Abbadia De Paraces is an events venue mostly booked for gatherings, photoshoots and TV shootings.
8. Guna Yana Islands, Panama as Rio and Tokyo’s Island
Remember Tokyo describing her and Rio’s new reality as a romantic movie in the Caribbean? Well, she wasn’t lying! These scenes were actually filmed in a paradise, and in one of the 400 islands of Guna Yana Islands in Panama.
9. Piazza Del Duomo Florence, Italy
Dressed like a true Italian in a fedora hat, this is the first scene where you see Berlin after his death in Money Heist Season 2. However, this scene was set five years ago, when Berlin was still known as Andres, and when they had just begun to plan their heist on the Bank of Spain.
10. Sanctuary of Truth, Thailand
In Money Heist season 3, we see Tokyo head towards a wooden castle-like structure to finally meet with the Professor and to hatch a plan to rescue Rio. Did you know this scene was actually filmed in Thailand by the majestic Sanctuary of Truth. It is the most iconic structure in Pattaya that you can actually visit through Klook.
BONUS: Palawan, Philippines
A year after the heist in Season 2, we see Raquel and the Professor reunite in a tropical destination that is said to be Palawan in the show. However, no one has confirmed if it was really shot in the Philippines. Regardless, we’d pick Palawan in a snap for a getaway too!
