Oshino Hakkai

Tourist attraction
★ 4.9 (46K+ reviews) • 705K+ booked
Located in the Fuji Five Lakes region, Oshino Hakkai is known for its eight stunning ponds, each with its own unique allure, located in the small village of Oshino. These ponds, like Deguchi Pond, Okama Pond, Waku Pond, and more, were actually formed from a dried-up sixth lake centuries ago. The ponds at Oshino Hakkai are filled with crystal-clear water from Mount Fuji's melted snow, where you can even take a sip straight from the source! Each mirror pond is filled with freshwater plants and sizable fish, making it a fascinating spot to explore. As you wander around, you'll come across charming restaurants, cute souvenir shops, and tempting food stalls selling local goodies like veggies, sweets, and crafts. The aroma of roasted sweet potatoes and rice crackers grilling in the open air adds to the delightful atmosphere.

Oshino Hakkai Ponds

The main attraction of Oshino Hakkai is that these eight ponds are fed by the snowmelt from Mount Fuji, resulting in some of the purest and clearest water in Japan. Each pond has its own unique charm and is surrounded by natural greenery, traditional thatched-roof houses, and scenic walking paths.

Mount Fuji Views

Oshino Hakkai offers some of the most breathtaking views of Mount Fuji. Whether you're strolling around the ponds or exploring the village, the majestic peak of Japan's highest mountain provides a stunning backdrop that is perfect for photography and relaxation.

Hannoki Bayashi Shiryokan

This open-air museum showcases old farming tools and samurai weapons. It also offers the best views of Mount Fuji from Sokonashi-ike. The museum charges a small entrance fee and is open from 9 AM to 5 PM.

Kaneyama Waterfall

Flowing from the Katsura River with water from Lake Yamanaka and Oshino Hakkai, the falls are surrounded by lava formations from Mt. Fuji. Standing at 10 meters high, they mirror the vibrant scenery all year round. In spring, you are greeted by mitsuba-tsutsuji blossoms, while autumn showcases vivid Japanese maple leaves. Tucked in a secluded spot, the falls offer a refreshing coolness even in the heat of summer.

Tips for Your Oshino Hakkai Visit

When is the best time to visit Oshino Hakkai?

The best times to visit Oshino Hakkai Village are during the spring and autumn months when the weather is mild and the scenery is at its most beautiful. Spring brings cherry blossoms, while autumn offers vibrant fall foliage.
