[Review] #KlookTries: We Went Glamping On A Rooftop In KL City At Castra By Colony

Itching for a city staycation but bored of being cooped up indoors at the same time? Well, here's a little surprise for you - you can now enjoy a fun glamping experience at Castra by Colony, complete with swanky tents and all, without have to step out of the city!

Whether you're a city kid who prefers staying close to home or simply looking for a cool new spot for large gatherings in KL, this luxury rooftop glamping site is made for you. Being city kids ourselves, we knew we had to check it out for ourselves, so we recently planned a staycation here with the whole team and here's what we thought about it.

The first of its kind in Malaysia, Castra by Colony is a glamping site situated in the city. Featuring 2 Mediterranean-inspired canopy tents set on a spacious private garden rooftop terrace, this luxury encampment offers the fun experience you'd expect from glamping, without compromising your privacy and modern-day comforts.

Fully equipped with all the essentials you would need for a comfortable stay, Castra can house 10 guests at a time. The charming glamping site also doubles as an event space that can accommodate up to 80 guests - we've heard that weddings are often hosted here!

Straight off the bat, we were impressed from the moment we stepped in. Aina from Colony was really accommodating and gave us a quick tour of the rooftop space, and it was pretty reassuring to know we had everything we needed for a comfortable night's stay.

If you're planning to barbecue, they've got the necessary equipment you would need to cook there, so all you'll have to bring are your meal ingredients. We skipped the barbecue (and ordered in pizzas for dinner), but at night we made an impromptu decision to roast marshmallows and were glad that we had all the tools to make it work!

What we were most pleasantly surprised with were the toilet amenities provided here. We were expecting the usuals like a hairdryer and cotton pads, but arranged neatly on a rolling shelf were more bespoke amenities such as makeup remover, mouthwash, a nail clipper and sanitary pads. They even provided 2 different types of toothpaste - one for daytime and one for nighttime!

If the pictures haven't convinced you already, we're not sure what will! The rooftop terrace was spacious and had so much greenery weaved throughout, it felt like such a stark contrast to the concrete jungle surrounding us. And if you're wondering - no, there isn't a view of the twin towers or KL tower, but we still had pretty city skyline views from up there.

Every corner on the rooftop was pretty much Instagrammable - we literally couldn't stop taking pictures! With its rustic wooden furnishings, colourful cushions and the charming tents in the backdrop, the entire outdoor garden space felt like it came right out of a Pinterest mood board.

The best part? The aesthetically-pleasing tents, hands down. Both of the canopy tents were so cosy, filled with plenty of cushions and places to sit (or lie down if you'd like), and beautifully decorated with Mediterranean influences. They're both air-conditioned as well, so it's definitely a cooling respite from the sun.

However, with it being in the city, there were a couple of minor downsides to it. Do expect traffic sounds from the streets below - we experienced occasional loud car engines and even an ambulance siren once throughout the night. The glamping site is also right next to a residential building, so we had to be aware of our noise levels late at night.

Castra by Colony is right in the city centre, conveniently situated within KL's Golden Triangle. If you'd like to get some shopping done or are looking for a place to eat at, Avenue K Shopping Mall is just a short 5-minute walk away and you can also cross over to Suria KLCC from there.

If you're feeling too lazy to head out like we were, don't worry! The glamping site is actually located atop Star Boulevard KLCC, a commercial building that houses a grocer, a bank, a lounge and bar, and more. There's even a BreadTalk and Toast Box downstairs if you'd like to grab breakfast (or a quick bite).

We highly recommend taking public transport, as there are plenty of bus stops within the area, as well as the LRT stop at KLCC. If you're driving, paid parking is available within Star Boulevard, but it can get pretty pricey if you're spending the night there, as it charges RM3 per hour and a flat rate of RM6 between 6PM-6AM.

If you're looking for a place to stay with a large group of friends, family members or even work colleagues like us, Castra by Colony is the perfect spot for you. We genuinely enjoyed our time here, and if you're someone who likes to capture tons of photos and videos for your memory bank (like us!), we're pretty sure you'd love this place too.

Besides, we'd say that glamping in the city is not an experience that you can get anywhere - it's pretty unique and definitely worth a try! ⛺️🌃
