Explore The Mysterious Mossy Forest In Cameron Highlands
Besides sweeping tea plantations and strawberry farms, Cameron Highlands is also home to a handful of hidden gems waiting to be explored. One such gem is the enchanting Mossy Forest, a strangely beautiful forest tucked in the highlands of Mount Brinchang, the second highest peak in Cameron Highlands. Blanketed with mysterious mist and shrouded in a magical aura, the Mossy Forest is located at an elevated position of 2,032 metres above sea level.
This moss-choked forest was ranked fifth place on Lonely Planet's list of Most Instagrammable Forests In The World and looks straight out of a scene from the Lord Of The Rings or Avatar.
Just like its name, it is filled with trees and all sorts of flora covered with layers of moss. You'll also get the chance to encounter exotic plants such as ferns, spices, orchids, and even medicinal plants that grow wildly in the moist environment. Join a tour for a hassle-free, enjoyable visit and let your guide point out the unique flora that fill the forest.
Make sure you head to the 50m tall observation tower where you can catch great views of the surroundings. Views are absolutely breathtaking on a clear day and you'll be able to catch a glimpse of the rolling fields, town, and valleys of Cameron Highlands.
Getting There
Though you can hike to the Mossy Forest and explore its mysterious trails on your own, it's best to join a tour where an experienced local operator can bring you through the best parts of the forest. It can be challenging to drive up yourself as the path is narrow and the surroundings can get very foggy, and most people only do so if they drive a 4WD. Should you plan to self-drive to get there, make sure you're a confident driver and do your research and proper planning before attempting to head up.
Forget about fretting over how to get there - for a hassle-free visit, book a half-day tour on Klook that comes inclusive of roundtrip transfers from your hotel/accommodation and a tour guide! Besides the Mossy Forest, the 6-hour tour will also include stops at Gunung Brinchang, BOH' Tea Centre, Butterfly Farm, and the Strawberry Farm.
Best Timing To Visit
The best time to visit the Mossy Forest is in the morning, when you can catch it shrouded in mist, giving it a gloomy, mysterious atmosphere that's great for photos. Do note though that it can get pretty chilly up here, especially in the morning. The geographic location and elevation of the Mossy Forest gives it a cool climate, and temperatures usually range between 10°c and 25°c - dipping below 10°c occasionally!
What To Wear
Pack and dress appropriately for a pleasant visit - put on proper walking shoes (due to the mist and moisture, the steps in the Mossy Forest can get slippery) and bring along a jacket to keep yourself warm. Make sure you also check the weather before you go, and bring along a raincoat or poncho if there's an indication of rain.
Entrance Fee
Since 1st March 2019, visitors of the Mossy Forest will have to pay a small fee to access it.
