Walkable roller coaster in South Korea?
More like 'stroller coaster'. ✨ You may have seen photos of this dreamy roller coaster-like structure on social media and wondered what it is - well, this 80ft-high steel staircase is currently a hot new attraction in South Korea!
All you need to know about Space Walk
Located atop the hills of Hwanho Park in the city of Pohang, Space Walk is a surreal art installation that measures 333m in length - winding trails, loops, and all. The highest point of the installation is the peak of a 360-degree loop (which, unfortunately is not walkable, of course - yes, we were wondering 'how?' too), standing proud at 25m above ground.
Due to being located at an elevation and thanks to the structure's sloping tracks, you'll be blessed with a bird's eye view of the Pohang cityscape as well as Youngil Bay and Youngildae Beach as you climb the steps. Visitors will get to choose from two available pathways located on two ends, one is an easier and gentler climb, while the other is steeper and perfect for more adventurous souls.
While you can soak in incredible views as you stroll through Space Walk in the day, the structure looks equally (if not even more) beautiful at night! The length of Space Walk is lined with LED lights built into its handrails and steps, making it glow against the night sky once it gets dark. For the best views (especially if you're a fan of pretty skies ⛅️), head over for the sunrise or to catch a sunset.
Getting to the Hwanho Park Space Walk
The Hwanho Park Space Walk is located in the city of Pohang, nestled in the province of North Gyeongsang, South Korea. Pohang is a modern city known for a few things including its steel industry, which is probably why it was picked as the home for a steel art installation like the Space Walk. ✨
You can get to Pohang from Seoul in 3.5 hours with the following route:
- Take a KTX train (Gyeongbu Line) from Seoul Station to Pohang-si station (2.5 hours)
- Board Bus 9000 and ride for 10 stops to Senior Welfare Center stop (20 minutes)
- Walk 5 minutes to get to Hwanho Park Space Walk
Admission is free, so you just need to figure out how to get there! Do note though that children under the height of 110cm are not allowed to climb Space Walk due to safety concerns, while those under 12 years old have to be accompanied by an adult.
