Having the right sahur meal during the Ramadhan month is incredibly important to set the pace for your long day of fasting ahead. We understand the struggle of waking up before the sun is up and dreading the hassle of cooking while still aching for more sleep, so we've put together a list of recipes for those who are constantly on the lookout for sahur meals that are quick to put together yet still delicious!
Most of the dishes below can be whipped up easily in less than 20 minutes and are packed with the nutrients you need to power through the day - don't forget to let us know which one's your favourite recipe, ours is #6!
1. Bubur Lambuk
Bubur lambuk is the iconic comfort food that's gentle on the stomach and perfect whether for sahur or iftar. Thankfully, it's extremely easy to put together this hearty bowl of goodness, and you can throw in any sort of ingredients of your preference.
#KlookTip: To speed up your prep time, you can prepare your bubur the night before or cook with boiled rice instead of raw rice in the morning - this will half your cooking time from an hour to a mere 20 minutes.
2. Nasi Goreng
For those who desperately need your rice to stay energetic, nasi goreng is a no-brainer option that's perfect for sahur because you only need 15 minutes to whip it up! We suggest swapping white rice for brown rice as it's known to be a more nutritious option and will keep you less lethargic and fuller for a longer amount of time. Don't forget to also throw in some veggies for a well-balanced meal!
3. Overnight Oats
Oats are healthy and super easy to put together - making it a great option for sahur. You can even make them the night before and chunk them into the fridge ready to be eaten straight the next morning. This way you'll be able to sneak in an extra half an hour of sleep!
Add some fun to your bowl of oats by cooking it a variety of ways throughout the month so you won't get bored of them so easily. We suggest topping your bowl of oats with dried or freshly cut fruits for additional fibre, or nuts for some extra crunch!
4. Simple Tortilla Wrap
Wraps are one of our favourite sahur meal options because they're so incredibly versatile. All you need to do is grab a pack of tortilla wraps during your grocery run and just add any leftover meat or vegetables from your dinner the night before as the filling - easy-peasy!
#KlookTip: If you're craving for something sweet in the morning, you can also do a sweet wrap and stuff it with fruits, nuts, or even peanut butter.
5. French Toast
Start your day right with a nice stack of toast! All you need is bread, butter, egg, milk, and toppings of your choice - everything you probably already have in your kitchen. If French toast isn't your thing, you can also make pancakes or waffles, they're just as easy and yummy.
6. Oyako Don
In case you're craving for something a bit different one of the mornings - we recommend trying this recipe out! Oyako Don is essentially a Japanese chicken and egg rice bowl, it looks and sounds sophisticated but you'll be surprised how easy it is to put it together. Although most Oyako Don recipes suggest adding sake to your dish, you can just leave it out and your rice bowl will taste just as good.
7. Egg Salad
Pssst, any egg lovers in the house? Eggs are perfect for sahur as they're packed with high quality protein and essential minerals to help you power through the day. If you're bored of your usual scrambled eggs or omelettes, try making a flavour-packed and nourishing egg salad as a change. Add some veggies or fruits on the side for a well-balanced meal and you'll be ready to face the day head-on.
8. Roti John
A lot of people have bread for sahur, but if you're craving something with a bit of a punch, try making roti john to start your day. Check out the above recipe to put together a satisfying roti john filled with ingredients of your choice. Again, don't forget your veggies!
