Up for a tuft date?
Have you ever been interested in joining a workshop but wordlessly pressed the "x" on the site after finding out how much it costs? Art workshops are lots of fun, but they can also be very overpriced and expensive, especially in Klang Valley. There are however more affordable options in town, and we recently got to check one out!
Nestled on the 2nd floor of MyTown Shopping Centre, Good Times DIY Studio is the first tufting studio to be located in a shopping mall! It's also the largest tufting studio in Malaysia at the moment with a capacity that can comfortably fit up to 40 pax at once. ✨
The studio occupies not one, but three shop lots in the mall, with spacious venues not just for tufting, but also baking, pottery, and bear brick fluid pouring art workshops. We had the opportunity to check out the brand new tufting outlet recently, and here's our verdict.
[Review] #klooktries tufting for the first time
We've always wanted to try our hand at tufting, especially with the sprouting of tufting studios all over Klang Valley in the recent months. However, classes are always so expensive, with average prices typically ranging between RM200 - RM300 per workshop.
Good Times DIY Studio however hopes to allow everyone to have some tufting fun without the burden of a hefty price tag. You can book a slot at only RM135 on Klook - package comes inclusive of guidance by a friendly instructor and all the necessary tools and materials needed to complete your rug piece.
To tuft your very own bespoke rug, simply book your preferred workshop on Klook (discounted rates available!) and place a slot reservation by contacting the workshop directly (phone number listed here). Once you get in touch, the studio will ask you to share across references or visuals of your preferred art work so they can sketch it in advance and you can begin tufting the moment you arrive! ✨
Customization is 100% free, so you can basically pick a design you personally like for your masterpiece (Tip: Pinterest has tons of amazing tufting design inspiration)! If not, the friendly instructors at the studio will also be happy to give you recommendations, and there are also sample rugs at the studio that you can draw inspiration from. When you place your booking you'll get to take your pick from 4 rug sizes available - we picked the 55" one and we thought it was just the perfect size. ✨
The studio we went to in MyTown Shopping Centre was really spacious, cosy, clean, and comfortable - we chose to visit on a weekday morning and pretty much had the whole space to ourselves. The studio instructors were also really nice, patient, and experienced - they expertly helped us sketch our artwork and taught us how to use the equipment. After a short while of briefing and preparation, we were ready to tuft!
To be very honest, tufting can get a lil tiring but it's also lots of fun! While it felt a bit daunting to hold the gun at the beginning, it's easy to get the hang of it once you have some practice. The instructors at the studio were extremely patient and guided us throughout the whole session. We took a bit longer than expected (3 hours) to complete our artworks, though if you have talent, the average time needed would be close to 2 hours.
What we liked about Good Times DIY Studio was that we felt completely at ease and took our time with completing our artworks. We heard that some studios charge extra if you go beyond the time slot allocated, but for Good Times, you can even come back on another day to finish yours up if you decide to not complete it in a sitting.
Our verdict?
It's a truly unique, fun, and therapeutic experience - if you love DIY craft projects, you'll love this. Besides coming here with your friends or family, we can also imagine it as a fun team building or party activity, especially since the studio is so spacious. ✨
Considering having some tufting fun? Good Times currently has tufting studios in not just MyTown Shopping Centre but also Paradigm Mall Petaling Jaya. They'll also be opening a new brand in Tropicana Gardens Mall Damansara at the end of November. Besides tufting, the studio also offers other hands-on workshops including:
- Pottery workshops (from RM140)
- Baking workshops (from RM100)
- Fluid pouring & art painting bearbrick (from RM80)
