Taiwan opens borders to tourists in October
Two years into the pandemic, most countries across the globe have relaxed travel restrictions and reopened borders to international tourists, with the exception of a handful of cautious ones, Taiwan being one of them.
For over two years, Taiwan remained rather closed off to travellers, with requirements for on-arrival testing and quarantine via a strictly-enforced "3 + 4" scheme - which requires a 3-day isolation quarantine plus 4 days of self-monitoring upon arrival.
In September though, an announcement was made by the Taiwanese government on plans to ease the country's stringent travel restrictions from mid-October onwards, just in time for the autumn and year-end travel season. If all goes well, the country will be ending its mandatory quarantine as well as on-arrival PCR test requirements. Visa-free entry will be resumed for citizens of all countries, and weekly arrival limits will also be increased tremendously, from a mere 10,000 to 60,000. ✨
The announcement was made by Cabinet spokesperson Lo Ping-cheng in a briefing on Thursday, 22 September. At the moment, quarantine-free entry is scheduled to be implemented from 13 October, though the government will continue to monitor the country's COVID-19 situation leading up to the target date.
Official travel guidelines for Taiwan (from 13 Oct):
- Malaysians (as well as citizens from countries on Taiwan's visa-free list) can travel to Taiwan without requiring a visa.
- Both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals will be able to enter Taiwan. The country does not impose any vaccination checks.
- 0+7 scheme: you no longer have to undergo quarantine upon arrival and will only be expected to self-monitor for 7 days.
- No pre-departure or on-arrival PCR tests will be required. At the airport, you will receive four rapid antigen test kits - take the first one on day 1 or 2, and report your result to an epidemic prevention staff member via phone. Take additional test(s) if you have any suspected COVID symptoms.
