Okinawa prefecture is a breathtakingly beautiful chain of islands that make up the southernmost prefecture of Japan. It is an archipelago of over 160 islands, but only a handful are inhabited.
The main island, which is also known as Okinawa Island, is the largest island and is home to the island's prefectural capital Naha.
There are direct flights that take about 2 hours and 45 minutes from mainland Japan to Naha Airport. Even for a short period of time on weekends, you can casually experience “Okinawa.”
Okinawa is blessed with stunning natural beauty, with a subtropical climate, white sandy beaches, and a blue ocean. It is a place where you can experience the unique culture and traditions of the Ryukyu Kingdom, which ruled over the islands for centuries before they became a part of Japan.
Okinawa's rich history and culture that are different from mainland Japan are evident in its many UNESCO World Heritage sites, such as Shurijo Castle, which was the seat of the Ryukyu Kingdom.
This site offers a glimpse into the past and allows visitors to appreciate the unique blend of East and West that is characteristic of Okinawa.
In addition to its cultural and historical attractions, Okinawa is also a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. The island is a haven for water sports lovers in Japan, with activities such as snorkeling, scuba diving, and kayaking available in abundance.
The island's colorful coral reefs are home to a wide variety of marine life, including sea turtles and even manta rays!
No matter when you visit, be it summer or winter, Okinawa is sure to leave a lasting impression on you with its stunning coral reefs in the blue oceans, beautiful beaches, and warm hospitality.
If you're planning a trip to Okinawa, deciding where to stay can be a daunting task. Fortunately, the island has something for everyone, from the north of the island to the southern end, whether you're looking for a luxurious beachfront resort or a budget-friendly guesthouse.
Let's divide the major island groups into parts to understand the differences between these areas, so you can choose the best accommodation to suit your sightseeing purposes.

What kind of place is the main island of Okinawa, Japan?
Okinawa Island is divided into three areas - the northern, central Okinawa, and southern regions - each with its own unique attractions and characteristics.
The southern part of Okinawa Island is home to Naha Airport, the gateway to the island. Direct flights are available from the rest of Japan to this airport.
It is famous for its white sandy beaches and sunny weather. This area is perfect for those looking to relax and unwind, with plenty of opportunities for swimming, snorkeling, and diving.
If you want to actively visit sightseeing spots, staying in the southern or central Okinawa area is convenient.
On the other hand, the northern part is more than an hour by car from Naha Airport. It is also where luxury resort hotels are located, and it is for those who want to relax, focusing on hotel stays rather than sightseeing.

Sightseeing Spots in Southern Okinawa, Japan
Southern Okinawa Island is full of tourist attractions, including Kokusai Street, Okinawa's premier shopping district, Sefa Utaki, a world heritage power spot, and Shurijo Castle, which is being rebuilt.
In addition to historical places, there are many seasonal spots, such as Senagajima Umikaji Terrace, so you can enjoy just the southern part without getting bored.
It is recommended not only for those who are new to the main island of Okinawa but also for those who want to be active in sightseeing.
Kokusai Street
About 10 minutes by car from the airport. If you take the Japan Okinawa Urban Monorail Line "Yui Rail", it takes 13 minutes to the nearest station "Kenchomae".
Kokusai-Dori has not only souvenir shops but also many restaurants and izakayas, so if you like a lively atmosphere, why not stay here?
My personal recommendation is “Sakaemachi Market” located in the area called “Asato”, which is located on the east side of Kokusai Street. Here, you can find the best Okinawan cuisine for your taste buds!
During the day, it is a market for locals, but at night, it transforms into a deep bar district with a Showa atmosphere!
With shops of all sizes lined up, you will definitely want to visit many more, from standing bars to exquisite izakayas.
We highly recommend “Lurinron”, a gyoza restaurant that always has a line, and “Kushiyaki Adan Main Store” where you can enjoy a wide variety of vegetable skewers!
DMM Kariyushi Aquarium
If you're a fan of marine life and looking for something new and exciting to do in Okinawa, look no further than the DMM Kariyushi Aquarium.
This state-of-the-art aquarium, which opened in 2020, has been making waves as a "new aquarium that has never existed before", and it's easy to see why.
Featuring a wide variety of exhibits and interactive displays, the DMM Kariyushi Aquarium offers visitors a unique and immersive ocean experience.
Visitors can watch as colorful tropical fish swim around the coral reefs and get an up-close look at the underwater world.
Located just a 20-minute drive from the airport, the DMM Kariyushi Aquarium is easily accessible and makes for a great activity to fill in the gaps on the day of arrival or departure.
Advance purchase of DMM Kariyushi Aquarium tickets is recommended.
Tomarin (Tomari Port)
The Kerama Islands, which were established as a national park in 2014, can be accessed from here and Marin (Tomari Port).
It takes about 15-20 minutes by car from Naha Airport to Tomari Port. Read more in the article below.
You can easily visit the Kerama Islands on a day trip by joining a tour. Please refer to the following for how to choose a Kerama snorkeling tour.
Okinawa World
Okinawa World, which is visited by more than 1 million people a year, is a theme park where you can experience the unique culture, history, and nature of Okinawa.
Located in the southern part of the island, Gyokusendo is one of the largest limestone caves in Japan and is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.
In addition to the cave itself, Gyokusendo also offers a variety of workshops and activities for visitors to enjoy. From traditional arts and crafts to hands-on experiences with local cuisine, there is something for everyone to learn and enjoy.
One of the best things about Gyokusendo is that it can be enjoyed even on rainy days. In fact, the cave is said to be even more beautiful when it's raining, as the water drips down from the ceiling, creating a magical and otherworldly atmosphere.
You can save money by purchasing Okinawa World tickets in advance here, so be sure to check it out!
Senaga Island Umikaji Terrace
About 15 minutes by car from the main airport, Senagajima Umikaji Terrace, which faces the west coast of Senagajima, is a seasonal spot where you can enjoy not only shopping and local specialties but also a spectacular view.
Because it is on the slope of a hill, it is easy to take pictures with the sea in the background. Furthermore, at dawn, you can also see the sun sinking into the horizon!
There is also a one-way shuttle bus to Naha Airport for JPY 250 (adult), so we recommend going there to kill time on the last day.
Okinawa Outlet Mall Ashibinaa
Okinawa Outlet Mall Ashibinaa, which has about 100 shops, is the only large-scale outlet mall in Okinawa.
This is also connected to the airport by a route bus (Naha Bus No. 95), so it would be nice to go shopping on the last day.
Things to do in Okinawa Island - Chubu
The central part is an area packed with highlights, such as scenic spots such as Manzamo and Cape Maeda, as well as the castle ruins of the former Ryukyu Kingdom.
About 40 minutes by car from the airport. If you want to visit all the spots in Okinawa from north to south, then Chubu should be on your list.
Mihama Town Resort American Village
Authentic America! Mihama Town Resort American Village, where you can enjoy the atmosphere.
It is very close to the US Kadena Air Base. You might get the chance to see the American troops!
Not only for those who miss traveling abroad but also for those younger people who want to take Instagrammable photos without leaving Japan, you should be able to enjoy just walking around the village!
Southeast Botanical Gardens
About 1,300 kinds of flowers and trees grow on the expansive grounds of the Southeast Botanical Gardens, a place with beautiful scenery that looks like a painting.
There is also a petting experience with cute animals such as squirrel monkeys and capybaras, which is very popular with families with children.
Get up to 11% off your Southeast Botanical Garden tickets in advance, so don't miss it!
Tour to swim with whale sharks
When most people think of whale sharks, they think of Churaumi Aquarium, but there are places where you can meet them here in the Chubu region as well.
About 800 meters from the port of Yomitan Village is Jinbei Point, and if you join a tour, you can swim with whale sharks!
Early reservations are recommended for this popular whale shark tour!
Boat fishing experience & Kayak (Hijagawa)
A little-known activity where you can go fishing on a boat that departs from Kadena fishing port and have the freshly caught fish cooked at a local restaurant!
Kayak through the mangrove forests of the Hijagawa River and enjoy an unforgettable sunset. There are also night kayaks.
There are plans that allow you to enjoy both fishing and kayaking, so why not choose one that fits your schedule?
Okinawa Island - Northern Attractions
If you want to relax at a resort hotel or relax on a beautiful beach, the northern part is recommended.
It takes over an hour by car from Naha Airport. Even in Okinawa, where tourists are increasing year by year, it is an area where untouched nature remains.
There are also spots that represent Okinawa, such as the Churaumi Aquarium and the Blue Grotto. If you have time to spare, this is an area you should definitely visit.
Churaumi Aquarium
Everyone should have heard of Churaumi Aquarium at least once.
The impressive tank where whale sharks swim is impressive, but the other exhibits are also worth seeing.
Furthermore, the outside of the aquarium is a spacious park, facing the sea with a great view, and if the weather is nice, you can spend more than half a day there.
Advance purchase is a must to get tickets at a discounted price!
Blue Grotto
Blue Cave is a snorkeling and diving spot that represents the island of Okinawa.
The beautiful blue world is even more fantastic when you see it in person.
This popular snorkeling tour can be enjoyed in about 2 hours, and children from the age of 6 can participate. It is recommended because it is easy to incorporate into the itinerary!
Kouri Ocean Tower
Kouri Ocean Tower is where you can enjoy the Okinawan scenery. Tickets are also discounted if you purchase them in advance, so use them wisely.
In the northern area, the road stretches along the white sand beach, so it is also recommended to drive towards Kouri Island.
While looking at the beautiful beach, you can enjoy the best drive with the pleasant breeze coming in from the window.
ATV Adventure
How about experiencing the beautiful nature of Okinawa on a four-wheeled buggy?
License-free ATV adventures are a popular activity that can be enjoyed in Nago City in the north and Itoman City in the south.
Children as young as 4 years old can participate, so the whole family can enjoy it.
I don't think there are many other experiences to explore in the tropical jungle. So, I highly recommend it!
There are still many spots to play in the northern area! This article introduces recommended sightseeing spots in the northern region, from classics to hidden gems.
Recommended for those who do not rent a car - Hip Hop Bus Day Tour
Even if you don't have a rental car, there are day tours that can efficiently visit the three major island groups and tourist spots introduced above, such as Churaumi Aquarium and Kouri Island in the north, and Cape Manzamo and American Village in the middle!
You can choose from 7 boarding locations in Naha and Chatan. There are 3 types of courses, all of which allow you to stay at the Churaumi Aquarium for a full 3 hours.
The price is only 6,000 yen. Read more about the details of the tour below.
This tour is highly recommended not only for those who are new to Okinawa but also for those who have trouble thinking about travel plans in Japan!
Recommended for those who want to explore freely - Charter
If you want to explore the main island of Okinawa freely, you can also use a charter!
For example, a 5-seater car (capacity of 4 people) costs 16,800 yen for 8 hours. For 4 people, it costs 4,200 yen per person, so you can explore the sights freely during the day.
You don't need a driver, so you can drink from noon!
There are a lot of fun things to do on Okinawa Island!
How was it? Feeling inspired? With a unique history, subtropical climate, and the beautiful surrounding ocean, Okinawa is a must-see part of Japan.
Let this be your Okinawa travel inspiration.
