Have a feast and enjoy the charm of your own country!
It’s not ordinary for every Filipino family to have at least one family member who is either an immigrant or an overseas worker. Balikbayans are recognized as modern-day heroes because of all the sacrifices that they have to make. They say there’s no place like home that’s why most OFWs feel homesick. Which is why it’s important to make the most out of their short stay with their loved ones.
Manila isn’t exactly a hot tourist spot in the country. Usually, this is just a layover before you head to your own province or to a beautiful beach in the other islands. But Manila has its own appeal and there’s a lot of places – old and new – to go to especially if you’re a balikbayan.
Here’s some of the places you can check out when a balikbayan comes home for the first time in a long time.
Poblacion
Poblacion is a hip and lively place in Makati and is a home to backpackers and other local artists and enthusiasts. This became a melting pot of diverse culture making the neighborhood unique in its own right. If you’re a foodie or just want to have a good time during your vacation, a balikbayan will surely enjoy Poblacion
Binondo
Binondo is one of the oldest sites in Manila that has witnessed wars and is also known as the first Chinatown in the world. Binondo was established in 1594 to separate Catholic Chinese from those who are from mainland China who aren’t practicing Catholics.
Today, Binondo is a well-loved place for those who are into food crawl or just want a taste of authentic and delicious Chinese cuisine. They’ve also kept the place alive with the vibrant colors and the Chinese influence from the Tsinoy community is evident.
Balikbayans will enjoy checking out traditional Chinese bakeries, street food, authentic Chinese dishes like dumplings, lumpia, and more.
Not familiar or don’t know where to go first? Klook offers an arranged Binondo food crawl where you can eat your way around the quaint alleys, get a deeper understanding about the history of Manila Chinatown from your expert foodie guide, and meet the local Tsinoy community in the area.
You can book your tour here.
Escolta
One of the oldest streets in Manila, Escolta is still part of larger Binondo. The galleon trade between Chinese merchants and other local consumers started here and became one of Manila’s business districts.
Currently, Escolta is now a big remembrance from the past and a new culture (without totally erasing its history) thanks to the younger generations who started to appreciate its beauty. A balikbayan will truly feel the spirit of their homeland here.
If you’re not in the mood to organize a day exploring old Manila, Fat Girls Day Out in partnership with Klook, has curated an affordable tour to easily navigate the underrated alleys of Manila.
Hidden Garden
What used to be a dumping ground in Lawton turned into a public garden with a “hidden cafe.” The Hidden Garden is a relaxing spot perfect for morning exercises or hangout place. The hidden cafe has a modern and industrial design with homegrown coffee brews. This place will be fairly new for a balikbayan since it was newly renovated and opened to the public last August 2021.

Address: Plaza Lawton, Ermita, Manila
Belfry Cafe
When in Intramuros, every balikbayan will know about its historic sites but as we keep up with the times, more shops are popping left and right. Belfry Cafe is located at Manila Cathedral and since it’s named Belfry, they’re spotted in the part of where the cathedral houses the bells.
Balikbayan can enjoy their coffee directly below the bells and just marvel at its look while sipping coffee. The cafe makes sure the bells are not in use before opening their doors for customers.
