Who can relate?
Mother’s Day is just around the corner, and to celebrate, we want to put the spotlight on our charming Filipino mothers. If you grew up with a Filipino mom, you would know that they have a language of their own - from their witty remarks to solid clapbacks. In this article, we run down a couple of our favorite Filipino mom phrases and what they actually mean. Happy Mother’s Day!
1. Bahala ka sa buhay mo!
If you disregard what she has to say, this is just to remind you to be accountable for your own actions. However, if things do go south, you can still run back to her!
2. Saan ka na naman pupunta?
Moms say this when you’ve made plans to go out, but not with her. She’s just trying to say that she misses you and wishes you can spend more time together!
3. Nung araw namin...
Sometimes, moms have a hard time understanding that times have changed, but we love a trip down memory lane!
4. Sinasabi ko na nga ba!
Mothers truly know best. She only means well when she gives her advice - so at least take it into consideration!
5. Anong akala mo sa ‘akin ATM?
Filipino moms say this to teach us the value of hardwork. They won’t hesitate to give us whatever else - baon, shampoo, tabo - you name it! But when it comes to money, you’ll need to work for it!
6. Manang-mana ka sa tatay mo!
You might take after your dad in some areas, but saying this is a sign that she will love you through thick and thin, for better or for worse, ‘til death do you part!
7. Mata kasi ang gamitin sa paghahanap, huwag bibig.
Have you tried this? It actually works every single time. Mom has the hacks!
8. Papunta ka pa lang, pabalik na ako.
Don’t make the same mistakes she did - and trust that she’s seen the bad end of a similar situation. Our moms are really just looking out for us!
9. Huwag ka nang uuwi dito!
A reminder that moms spend a lot of time worrying about us and the least we can do is assure her of our safety from time to time.
10. Close the aircon (or lalabas yung aircon)
Electricity is not cheap - and we’ve got our moms to remind us of that! Safe to say, this is one tip we’re bringing into our own homes one day.
11. Huwag magsayang ng pagkain, maraming nagugutom na iba
We are blessed in many ways, and she reminds us not to take these things for granted.
12. Hinahanap ka na ng tatay mo.
She uses your dad as an excuse, but she just wants to see you before the day ends especially if you’ve been out all day.
