Craving authentic dim sum and egg waffles?
Have you heard the news? After more than two years of strict pandemic protocols, the Hong Kong government has announced the end of its travel-related COVID-19 restrictions. Yes, that means everyone can start planning their trip to Hong Kong again. We bet you missed spending the holidays at Disneyland!
Of course, there are still some Hong Kong travel requirements you need to prepare.
As of 14 December 2022, inbound travelers from overseas can move around freely (but masked!) upon arrival as long as they test negative.
What documents do you need?
Aside from a valid passport, there are 2 more documents you’ll need. Be sure to have all these Hong Kong travel requirements ready before departing.
- Proof of COVID-19 vaccination. Refer to the “List of COVID-19 vaccines recognized for specific purposes.”
- Proof of negative rapid antigen test (RAT) or PCR test 24 hours prior to your flight's departure.
- Duly accomplished health declaration form which you can find online. Don’t forget to save the generated QR code.
Things you need to know before departure
Regardless of which airline you’re flying with, travelers must be fully vaccinated to go on a trip to Hong Kong. Upon arrival, travelers are encouraged to take daily COVID-19 rapid antigen tests (RAT) for the first five days they spend in Hong Kong.
You’ll also need to present the Health & Quarantine Information Declaration form and a negative pre-departure Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) that’s taken within 24 hours.
What is the ”0+3” arrangement?
UPDATE: As of 14 December 2022, Hong Kong has lifted its COVID-19 travel restrictions. Travelers no longer need to undergo the 0+3 method.
While you aren’t required to quarantine at a designated facility, the Hong Kong government imposes a 0+3 or “test and go” arrangement. This includes a PCR test as soon as you arrive and 3 nights of medical surveillance.
- Day 0 – The day of arrival in Hong Kong is considered day 0. Travelers will take a PCR test at the airport to determine their “Amber Code.” There’s no need to wait for the results, so you can go ahead and get settled at your hotel.
- Day 0-2/3 – Even if you tested negative on your PCR test, you’ll still need to take a RAT daily. However, this doesn’t mean you need to confine yourself to the hotel. You’re free to go out and explore Hong Kong during these 3 days, but will not be allowed to enter premises that require vaccine passes (i.e. restaurants and bars.)
- Day 3-7 – On days 3-7, inbound passengers will have to do self-surveillance. Again, you’re allowed to wander around but must still take a RAT every day until Day 7 and a PCR test on Days 4 and 6 as part of the self-monitoring protocol.
Additional Information
- On arrival in Hong Kong, all visitors must pass a temperature check. Travelers with a fever will be subjected to additional screening.
- Masks are still mandatory, so don’t forget to wear them, especially in public places. This includes the airport, public transportation like the MRT, and other establishments.
- To be able to enjoy your trip to Hong Kong, you’ll need to acquire a Provisional Vaccine Pass at the designated post office or online. This will be valid for 180 days or six months from the date of arrival. Don’t forget to carry this around with you and present it to enter the premises.
