In case you missed it, the Department of Tourism has announced the reopening of Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte to local tourists from Luzon.
Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte are home to some of the most iconic attractions in the country, and as well as some hidden gems we can't wait to discover. That said, if you've got plans to head up north, here are a couple attractions in Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte to add to your list. Check it out:
1. Calle Crisologo
You can’t miss the iconic Calle Crisologo in Vigan, Ilocos Sur. On your way up to Ilocos Norte, a stopover at Calle Crisologo is of utmost importance. This UNESCO World Heritage Site sings of our country’s rich history with stone buildings, capiz windows and horse-drawn carriages still roaming the streets. It will truly feel like you’ve been brought back in time.
2. Paoay Church
Paoay Church is one of the most famous churches in the country, and one glance will show you why. Its striking exterior is a prime example of Baroque architecture, which has actually held up after two major earthquakes despite some major damages. It was later named a National Cultural Treasure by the government and remains to be the region’s postcard attraction.
3. Bangui Windmills
Situated by the beach, a stopover at the Bangui Windmills is a refreshing and picturesque one. These sights are rare, especially coming from a crowded city like Manilla. So take it in and enjoy the unobstructed views and clean sea breeze.
4. Pangil Rock Formation
The Pangil Rock Formation is a sight unlike any other; one you’d never think you would chance upon in the Philippines. These corral rock formations are scattered throughout the beach, rising above clear blue waters where passersby can actually cool off before their next destination.
5. Cape Bojeador
Cape Bojeador is worthy of a spot in your Instagram feed not only because of its unique structure, but also because it happens to be a cultural landmark that was inaugurated in the 1800’s during the Spanish colonial period. It’s definitely a trip on the way up, but the views are indescribable.
6. Patapat Viaduct
Thanks to its stunning coastal views, the Patapat Viaduct has become a popular attraction for tourists on a road trip through Ilocos Norte. It’s nothing incredibly special - just a winding road by the coast that makes for the perfect photo-op. Not sure where the exact spot is? Cruise along the road, and you’ll find a cluster of cars in the sideway and you’re there.
7. Kapurpurawan
These creamy white geological rock formations put Yehliu Geopark in Taiwan to shame! If you didn’t know such beautiful natural wonders existed north of Luzon - now you do. Despite its unique appearance, it’s relatively underrated compared to Ilocos Norte’s top attractions so you’re guaranteed to have most of the place to yourself for a mini photoshoot and beachside musings.
8. Kabigan Falls
Deep inside a tropical forest, you’ll find Kabigan Falls, a secluded single stream waterfall. Nestled in a tiny corner, it offers travelers a quiet and serene rest after the trek up. Guests are also welcome to swim or take a refreshing dip in the waters.
9. Bantay Abot Cave
If you’ve got time in your itinerary to make a photo-worthy stopover at the Bantay Abot Cave, do it! Bantay Abot Cave actually means ‘Mountain with a Whole’ and that is exactly what you will see at the end of the beach. You can rest by the beach, or attempt to climb the mountain, too - all for that photo opportunity!
10. Tanap Avis Falls
Tanap Avis Falls is one of Ilocos Norte’s more popular waterfalls - thanks to its unbelievably pigmented turquoise waters. Many tourists who simply stop by for a refreshing bath find themselves indulging in this opportunity and taking their own leisure time admiring these natural wonders.
