Indoor Plants for Beginners
No green thumb, no problem!
If you still haven’t tried your hand in gardening this quarantine, this is a sign that you should finally take the plunge. There is a reason why so many people have transformed into plantitos and plantitas over quarantine; and while many are still intimidated by the concept of becoming plant parents, we put together a list of indoor plants that’ll change your mind!
Plants have become more accessible online during quarantine, but the plant shop we highly recommend is Tierra Plants. They offer a great selection of indoor plants as part of their catalogue, offer reasonable prices and very safe and convenient shipping as well. You can also get 10% off their selected plants on Klook - a deal you won’t find anywhere else. To find out which indoor plants to invest in, keep on reading!
1. Snake plant
Snake Plants are pretty low-maintenance, which is most probably why many starting plant mom and dads get this as their first plant baby. This type of plant is known to survive droughts, so if you miss a couple of watering days, we promise it won’t die on you.
Although this type of plant would thrive more under direct sunlight, it can actually survive in lower light conditions. Snake plants also make for good air-purifying plants as it's been shown to filter chemicals like benzene, xylene and formaldehyde to name a few.
2. Giganteum
If you’re looking to fill a big space in your home, the Giganteum is an awesome plant that doesn’t require so much sunlight! If you’ve already got a jungle starting along your windowsill, this will do well in a semi-shaded spot in your home. However, do make sure to keep its soil moist as it doesn’t like to be dried out!
3. Peace Lily
To add to your growing collection of indoor plants, get yourself a Peace Lily to level up your platito/plantita game.
If you’ve already come up with a watering routine for your indoor plants, then you’ll have no problem with the Peace Lily. It’s a plant that needs a tad bit more attention, so keep it moist and in a bright place in the room.
4. ZZ Plant
The ZZ Plant thrives in indirect sunlight. If you’ve got space across from your window, this plant will grow happily in its little corner. Like the Snake Plant, the ZZ Plant is pretty drought tolerant, with some even saying they water it only once a month.
5. Rhapis Excelsa or Lady Palm
Bring the tropics into your home with a Rhapis Excelsa or Lady Palm! This large plant thrives in bright indirect sunlight and loves its soil moist! If you’re easing into the plantita or plantito role, creating a watering routine with this plant and the giganteum would be a good place to start!
6. Livistona Australis
This palm plant thrives in either dry or moist soil, making it a relatively easy plant to have as a beginner. The Livistona Australis does however grow better in a shaded location, so if you have a bald shaded area in the house, this would be the perfect plant to put!
7. Aloe Vera
If you love Aloe Vera for its healing properties, then you'll love it even more after we tell you it’s incredibly easy to take care of.
Place this plant in a bright sunny spot in the room and keep the watering down to a minimum! Aloe Vera plants like their soil pretty dry before they go through another round of watering.
8. Pothos
If you’re eyeing those vine-y or trailing plants, you’re in luck! The Pothos is another indoor plant that is quite easy to take care of. While it starts off pretty small, you may need to repot this plant just because it grows quite quickly. You can place your Pothos in almost any part of your room as it can survive in moderate indoor light, and low light conditions.
In terms of caring for your Pothos, you must keep its soil moist - but be careful not to overwater!
9. Dracaena
For the budding plant parent who is hardly ever home, the Dracaena might be the plant you're looking for. Not only does it good in any room, but it's low-maintenance too. Although it's said to thrive in a variety of light environments, you might want to keep this away from direct sunlight!
10. Spider Plant
The Spider Plant isn’t a fan of direct sunlight, so you’re going to want to place this a little farther from the window. This vivacious number is sure to turn your space into the urban jungle you’re dreaming of, just as long as it is watered at least once a week and its receiving bright indirect sunlight.
11. Rubber Tree
Some might say that Rubber Trees aren’t the easiest indoor plants to take care of, but we beg to differ! Most (if not all) rubber trees take neglect pretty well (oof), so you won’t need to constantly remind yourself about watering this plant baby. Just make sure to place it where it can receive bright light, and you’ll be one happy rubber tree owner. Did we mention that it’s also an air-purifying plant?
12. Bird’s Nest Fern
To the untrained eye, having a Bird’s Nest Farm in your room may seem really impressive. But really, it’s quite easy to care for as long as it’s placed in medium indirect light and a humid environment. A good place to put it would be your bathroom or right by a humidifier!
13. Selloum
A Selloum plant loves bright indirect sunlight and a moderate amount of water. If you find that your Selloum plant’s leaves are drooping, simply adjust your watering routing. Though they should be watered regularly, these plants prefer moist and not soggy soil.
