A journey to the past
Just three hours away from Manila, tourists will find themselves worlds away from the city’s modern buildings and bustling scene. Nestled by the shores of Bagac, Bataan is Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar, an open-air museum and heritage park that celebrates the country’s Hispanic-Filipino history. Conceptualized by Mr. Jerry Acuzar, visitors will definitely feel like they’ve stepped back into the past with the park’s century-old homes and cobblestone streets.
Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar features 22 colonial mansions dating all the way back to the 17th century. Although several of those exhibited are replicas, most homes are part of Mr. Azucar’s original collection which have originated from provinces like Nueva Ecija and Tuguegarao. These “casas” – which means ‘home’ in Spanish – were carefully reconstructed brick by brick, hence the long wait till its grand opening in 2010.
The park also features the Sanctuario de San Jose, Plaza Marcelino, and the iconic Hotel De Oriente – which is believed to be the country’s first ever hotel. So for visitors planning to do more than a day trip in this part of Bataan, a one night’s stay in this hotel is sure to elevate the experience for any heritage enthusiast.
Take a walk through history
To fully appreciate the beauty of the country’s Hispanic heritage, we recommend joining in on an immersive tour of these restored casas – including ones that are not open to the public like Casa Binan and Casa Baliuag. A tour guide will be giving in-depth insights about the history of each home, and as well as the other major Spanish influences brought to the country. In this tour, guests will also be greeted with an abundance of Filipino customs and traditions through performances, games, and even horse-drawn carriage rides. Trust us, this is a trip worth taking and one that's no longer too far if you take the Subic Clark Tarlac Expressway or SCTEX.
Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar is more than just another tourist destination. This attraction has immortalized a nearly forgotten past steeped in fascinating traditions and cultures that has contributed to the the country’s independence. If you’re looking to discover more of the country’s history, there’s no better choice than an adventure through 18th-century Philippines at Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar.
