One of the best museums in Paris can be found in a garden!
If visiting the famous Tuileries Garden is part of your itinerary during your trip to Paris, then you’d be delighted to know that admiring the scenery and taking relaxing strolls are not the only things you can do there!
Did you know that at the west corner of the garden, there’s a museum? It’s called the Musee de l’orangerie, which is one of the most popular and best museums in Paris! It has garnered acclaim for being one of the best institutions to visit if you want to see paintings crafted back in the Impressionist age of art. It’s also a good choice for those bit by the museum bug, so if you’ve thoroughly explored the likes of The Louvre and Musee d’Orsay but you’re looking for another museum to explore, you can’t go wrong with Musee de l’orangerie.
The works of legends inside the Musee de l’orangerie
Musee de l’orangerie boasts a wonderful collection of paintings by many of the Impressionist era’s luminaries, such as Henri Rousseau, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Henri Matisse, and Paul Cezanne. It also houses works by the famous cubism figure Pablo Picasso as well as Amedeo Modigliani, the latter being known for his portrait art where the subjects have elongated figures.
But the gallery’s most important attractions are the famous Nympheas (Water Lilies) paintings of Claude Monet. The paintings that comprise this series are some of the most important works of art in the world. They depict Monet’s gorgeous flower garden in his home in the village of Giverny, and it showcases the dabbing brush style that is a hallmark of Impressionist paintings. Seeing this collection will surely be the highlight of your visit.
Musee de l’orangerie Health and Safety Guidelines
Before making your way to see the beautiful artworks of Musee de l’orangerie, it’s best to take note of a few health and safety guidelines that need to be followed:
- Visitors aged 12-15 must provide a health pass before entering
- Those aged 16+ must provide a vaccine pass before entering
- Guests aged 6+ must wear Category 1 face masks at all times inside the museum
These government mandates are in place to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. The reason why this and other museums have remained open is that these mandates have been effective, so best to follow suit!
Making your way to the Musee de l’orangerie
In order to get to the museum, you’ll need to enter the Tuileries Garden. You can get there by either:
- Riding the RER (Reseau Express Regionale): take Line C and stop at Gare Musée d’Orsay. Exit the station and cross the bridge to reach the Tuileries Garden. You’ll find Musee de l’orangeri at the garden’s west corner
- Riding the metro: ride Line 1, 8, or 12 and get down at Concorde Station. The museum is a short walk from there
The museum is open from Wednesday-Monday, 09:00 - 18:00.
