    What was once a sleepy town is now gradually making waves. Davao Oriental’s Mati city has started to gain touristy attention during the recent years. Thanks to Mati’s spectacular landscapes, wildlife sanctuaries, and world-class beaches, it has become a must-visit when in Davao. In case you’re wondering what’s up in Mati, here are some of the places and things that you should try and explore.

    1. Surf at the Dahican Beach

    Pristine powdery white sands and towering coconut trees make up the peaceful Dahican Beach. Feel the rustic island vibe at this Mati beach where its most popular activity is surfing. Many people come to the Dahican Beach to ride its powerful waves, and learn about the water sport as well. There are also those who do skimboarding, so if you’re interested in these things, you really have to check what the buzz is about.

    2. Enjoy breathtaking views at the Sleeping Dinosaur Island

    Did you know that there is such a thing as a Sleeping Dinosaur Island in Mati? This Mati beach earned its name from the shape of the island, which seems to resemble that of a resting plesiosaur, an aquatic dinosaur. You can see this from the Badas Point in Dawan where there is a viewing deck to check out the Sleeping Dinosaur Island. You can also choose to go to the island itself through trekking. The view is stunning so don’t forget to take your camera with you.

    3. Learn about Davao Oriental’s history at the Subangan Davao Oriental Museum

    Appreciate the rich culture and history of Davao Oriental when you come to the Subangan Museum in Mati city. One of the interesting things that will welcome you in this place is a 53 feet skeleton of a sperm whale named Davor. Found on the shores of Governor Generoso, a Mati beach, it is said to be the largest whale in the country. Apart from that, you will also see exhibitions dedicated to the Mandaya and Kalagan ethnic groups in Davao Oriental.

    4. Hang out with your friends at The Lokal Mati

    Here’s a chill place to hang out with your friends when in Mati city. Visit The Lokal Mati, a kitchen, coffee and bar, in the heart of the city. They’re open from 7 in the morning daily. While they’re only up until 10PM during Thursdays to Sundays, they’re open till 12 midnight during Fridays and Saturdays. They serve affordable local dishes and drinks, including cocktail pitchers.

    5. Have a photo op at Mati City’s Baywalk

    When in Mati, don’t forget to pass by the iconic Baywalk of the Davao Oriental city. Get a mandatory photo op at the large ‘I heart Mati’ sign with the ocean bay behind. There are different stalls here where you can buy some street food and souvenir items. It’s a laid back park, fit for families and friends. Jog in this area in the morning, watch the sunset in the afternoon, or take a breezy night stroll - your call.

    6. Snorkel at Waniban Island

    Feel the white sands between your toes at this small, peaceful Mati beach. The crystal clear waters of the Waniban Island makes it a great place to go snorkeling and scuba diving. From the shores of Masao, it will only take you about 15 to 20 minutes via a motorized boat to reach Waniban Island. If you are planning to stay overnight here, you can bring your own tent or book a Nipa open cottage.

    8. Discover Pujada Island

    Powdery sands await visitors of the stunning Pujada Island. An underrated Mati beach, the island is part of the bigger Pujada Bay. Its unspoiled shores and clear cerulean seas make this beach a must-visit when in Davao. There are different ways to get to Pujada Island. One of which is to hire boatmen from the shores of Barangay Tamisan, Mati City.
