Head Down The Rabbit Hole To Wonderland At the Singapore ArtScience Museum

Channel your inner Alice and enter the whimsical world of Wonderland – where nothing is really as it seems. Developed by the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), the Singapore ArtScience Museum’s latest Wonderland exhibition is an all-immersive adventure that invites visitors to explore different environments, interactive showcases and augmented reality set pieces.

Running from 13 April – 22 September this year, Wonderland draws heavy inspiration from Lewis Carroll’s original Alice, and explores her journey through the years as she evolves along with modern pop culture.

Wonderland is equal parts pop culture exhibit, interactive art installation and digital adventure. Grab your Lost Map of Wonderland and step through the looking glass, right into this fantastical world!

Before your Wonderland adventure begins, you need your passport to enter this magical world. In Lewis Carroll’s Drawing Room, you’ll receive a Lost Map of Wonderland. Every map is slightly different from the rest and comes with a special key – which means that your Wonderland experience will be unique to you.

Once you’ve enchanted your map, you’re ready to set off.

Serving as a terminal between the outside world and the realm of Wonderland, the Hallway of Doors holds collections of original letters and books that trace the publication history of Alice’s stories, as well as a series of drawings by Sir John Tenniel. Each door hides something different, with various nooks and drawers to discover.

Once you’ve had your fill of exploring, step through the right door and begin your true Wonderland journey.

At the Pool of Tears, you’ll be able to look back at Alice’s first journey from page to screen. Featuring scenes from early 1900s Alice films, this magical projection is a portal through time to some of the earliest representations of Alice in films.

Plunge deeper into Alice’s world as you step into the Looking Glass House, which gives you a behind-the-scenes peek into the production process of the 1930s to 1980s Alice films and television shows.

You’ll find script pages, sketches, character designs and props all in this room.

Set foot in the Queen’s Croquet Ground, where you’ll receive first word of the Matter Hatter’s Tea Party. You’ll be issued an invite that’s required for entry – don’t lose it!

While you wait for the Tea Party to start, take this chance to create your very own Card Soldiers, which you can bring to life there and then with your enchanted Lost Map of Wonderland!

When your invite is called out, take a seat at the Mad Hatter’s tea table, and watch the tea party come alive all around you! We won’t give away too much, but this is truly an all-immersive experience to look forward too in Wonderland.

This section of Wonderland features the stop motion techniques employed in Lou Bunin’s 1949 production, Jan Svankmajer’s 1988 Alice, and the more recent 2007 Quay Brothers’ Alice in Not So Wonderland.

Take your time to explore this area, which is also filled with props and set pieces you can interact with.

Finally, you’ll be taken through a gallery featuring Walt Disney Studios’ long history with Alice, from concept art to audiovisual clips.

The final sections of Wonderland highlight Alice’s transition to the modern world, such as in the latest Alice blockbuster movies that blend live action with digital animation.
