The Chinese New Year public holidays are on a Tuesday and Wednesday this year—that means you get to transform your two-day break into an upsized five-day long weekend by just taking one day of leave! With restrictions probably preventing any gatherings with your extended relatives this year (thanks, Omicron), how about making use of this opportunity to cosy up and enjoy some intimate family time with the kids?
If you have yet to swing by Pop Up Disney! A Mickey Celebration at Suntec City, now’s your chance. This exclusive pop-up event is only available until March 2022, and features none other than the well-known and loved Mickey Mouse himself in seven experiential rooms. A Mickey Celebration.
2. April: Good Friday
Public Holiday(s): Good Friday, 15 April
Take leave on: 14 April
Make your Good Friday long weekend even better by taking leave on Thursday and escaping to Korea for a spring escapade! April is springtime in Korea, which means you’ll get to witness gorgeous flower-draped scenery, with postcard-perfect sights and photo ops at every corner. While the famous beot-kkot or cherry blossom season starts in March, it is also known to last all the way till mid April in the Northern parts such as Nami Island and Seoul.
However, flowering seasons can vary each year—if you find yourself missing the cherry blossoms when you arrive, fret not! After the beot-kkot season is when the azaleas start blooming at full force, so you can look out for those pretty pink and purple blooms too!
Some must-see and dos in Korea to look out for:
3. May: Labour Day, Hari Raya Puasa & Vesak Day
May is a sweet time for a mid-year break, with five public holidays all packed into one month. This makes for two long weekend breaks—firstly, the super long weekend which consists of the Labour Day and Hari Raya Puasa PH as well as the Vesak Day PH.
(i) Labour Day + Hari Raya Puasa
Public Holiday(s):
- Labour Day: 1 May
- Hari Raya Puasa: 2-3 May
Take leave on: 4-6 May
For the long Labour Day and Hari Raya break, why not plan for a nice long holiday to the USA? We suggest exploring the best of the West Coast via an epic road trip like no other. There are so many things to see and do! Can’t start a road trip without a car, so snag your trusty vehicle of choice by booking your car rental on Klook, where you can take your pick from various top-rate suppliers including Hertz, Avis and Enterprise.
Itinerary-wise, you cannot miss all the iconic landmarks in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Top picks in San Francisco include the Golden Gate Bridge, which you can tour via cruise or seaplane, Madame Tussauds, Aquarium of the Bay and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Nature lovers cannot miss heading out to Yosemite National Park, which is in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains.
To make your explorations more fuss-free, opt for the Go San Francisco All-Inclusive Pass, which includes a guide book, admission to 28 top SF attractions as well as selected dining, shopping and activity discounts. The best part of course is skipping the queues for tickets or having to wait to pay at the gate. It also has 1,2,3 or 5-day options to suit your needs, depending on how much time you’ll be spending in the area.
After leaving San Francisco, head down to Los Angeles, where even more fun attractions await. For theme park enthusiasts, a trip to Universal Studios Hollywood is a must with attractions such as Jurassic World, King Kong and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Always curious about film sets and how they are made? There’s also the Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood in Los Angeles where you can go on a guided tour of a real Hollywood studio and even step into sets of your favourite TV series like Central Perk and Monica’s apartment from Friends!
For those looking to beat the queues to various attractions, there’s also the GO City - Los Angeles All-Inclusive Pass, which like it’s San Francisco’s counterpart, offers you skip-the-line priority and hassle-free visits to some of LA’s top attractions.
Of course, no trip to the west coast is complete if you don’t make a pilgrimage to the happiest place in the world—Disneyland! Unleash the kid in you with original cult favourite rides like the Space Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean and It’s a Small World. Besides beloved Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, you’ll also get to meet Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar Animation characters too! Multi-day Park Hopper tickets are also available for those who want to dedicate more time to exploring the different theme parks.
(ii) Vesak Day
Public Holiday(s): Vesak Day, 15-16 May
Take leave on: 17 May
Just in time for a belated Mother’s Day pampering—take leave on 17 May and transform your Vesak Day PH into a four-day long weekend dedicated to the queen herself. We suggest going on a staycation and shopping spree at Marina Bay Sands—after all mum deserves the best, right?
Take mum to soak in the view from the iconic (and world’s largest) rooftop Infinity Pool for a dip before indulging her with a session at the hotel’s spa, Banyan Tree Spa Singapore. The spa offers a plethora of relaxing and rejuvenating massages and treatments like jade face massage and therapeutic herbal bath.
More activities that mum will enjoy:
Alternatively, if you’re looking to whisk mum away on a short trip to destress and unwind, Cruise to Nowhere with Dream Cruises will definitely do the trick. Book a comfy Palace Suite which comes with a bathtub for a relaxing soak, anytime and imagine waking up to a glistening sea view every morning! Ah, bliss.
There are also a myriad of dining and entertainment options onboard, so mum will never go hungry or get bored. Spend quality time bonding with mum over activities you would never otherwise do, like going for a dance class or chilling out in the jacuzzi. If your mum is up for some adventure, there’s also the rope courses and ziplines to try, along with a rock climbing wall. The fun doesn’t stop come nightfall—enjoy drinks with mum at the bar before heading to the cinema by the sea to catch a movie or watch a live performance before heading to bed.
Dream Cruises is also offering a New Year promo for bookings in April and May departures, with prices starting at $683.10/night (Apr) for the Palace Suite.
4. July: Hari Raya Haji
Public Holiday(s): Hari Raya Haji, 10-11 July
Take leave on: 12 July
The Hari Raya Haji long weekend is the best time to take a nice relaxing break as we enter into the second half of the year, and what better way to chill out than with an extended staycation?
We suggest booking a room at Dusit Thani Laguna Singapore which exudes coastal resort paradise vibes. Located in the middle of the sprawling Laguna National Golf Resort Club away from the maddening crowds, this tranquil retreat offers rooms with a city or pool view as well as a whopping three swimming pools and three tennis courts. There’s also the hotel’s Devarana Spa, which offers a comprehensive menu of wellness treatments, facials and massages. All you need to do is book your stay and relax away!
The hotel is also a mere 15-minute drive from Jewel Changi, which has everything you need from dining and shopping to kid-friendly things to do. Sp
end your day marvelling at the world’s tallest indoor waterfall aka the HSBC Rain Vortex, bouncing your way across the Jewel Changi Manulife Sky Nets and wandering your way through the Mirror Maze and Canopy Park.
5. August: National Day
Public Holiday(s): National Day, 9 August
Take leave on: 8 August
Celebrate Singapore’s independence during the National Day long weekend with a host of fun outings and activities around our island home. We suggest doing a staycation at The Fullerton Hotel, a grand heritage hotel that offers sumptuous rooms and an exquisite high tea or just exploring and rediscovering what the area has to offer.
P/S: The Fullerton Hotel makes for an ideal base when it comes to watching the NDP or the rehearsals, and if you book a room at a high floor or head out early to find a good spot, you can easily watch the marchpast, flypast and mobile column—not forgetting a front row seat to the riveting fireworks show at the end!
Other attractions near The Fullerton Hotel:
6. October: Deepavali
Public Holiday(s): Deepavali, 24 October
Take leave on: 25 October
For the Deepavali long weekend, how does an island getaway sound? Beach paradise aside, did you know that Sentosa is also chock full of other exhilarating attractions too? We recommend booking a staycay at one of the many hotels in Sentosa like Shangri-La Rasa Sentosa and using that as base while you explore around the area.
Calling all adrenaline junkies! Here’s the fun part—after you’re done enjoying your vitamin sea at Sentosa’s golden beaches and chill beach clubs, Sentosa is also home to a host of exhilarating activities, such as the AJ Hackett Bungy Jump, Giant Swing at SkyPark Sentosa, Hydrodash as well as iFly and Singapore’ highest open-air panoramic ride, SkyHelix. Since October is also Halloween month, you can be sure that there will be some thrilling spook-tacular events and activities to look forward to as well!
Other classic RWS/Sentosa attractions to consider:
7. December: Christmas
Public Holiday(s): Christmas, 25-26 December
Take leave on: 27 December (feel free to add more days to make your EOY holiday break extra shiok!)
Ah, the end of the year is finally here! You deserve a nice long holiday after all your hard work, so why not reward yourself and extend your Christmas PH break into the new year (add on as many days as you like from 27 Dec onwards) with a trip to Winter Wonderland in Switzerland?
Nothing spells Christmassy vibes than frolicking in the snow, meandering your way through the Christmas markets and exploring snow-capped landscapes. Magical, right? One must-visit is Switzerland’s Matterhorn or “Chocolate Mountain”, which will probably look familiar to you (Hint: take a bar of Toblerone with you).
Tip: One great essential to have on your Swiss adventures is the Swiss Travel Pass, which gets you unlimited rides on trains, panorama trains (including Bernina Express and the Glacier Express!), boats, and buses for up to 15 consecutive or flexible days in Switzerland as well as up to 50% off mountain excursions to Swiss peaks such as Jungfrau and Titlis.
It also includes exclusive deals or free entry for more than 500 museums such as the Matterhorn Museum, Swiss National Museum and Glacier Garden. Just flash your pass and troop right in without having to purchase tickets at the counter.
Now that you know which dates to look out for, all you have to do is book your AL early and start counting down to enjoying your long weekend adventures!
