Social distancing measures in restaurants
As restaurants around the world are in their early stages of reopening and restarting dine-in operations, to enforce social distancing many have turned to different types of barriers and props.
From stuffed animals to giant hats and even pool noodles, restaurants are coming up with creative and quirky ways to help with disease prevention and making their dining spaces more lively.
Though these difficult times, sometimes silly methods are all it takes to make this better. Here are some of our favourites!
Stuffed Capybaras at Izu Shabonten Zoo in Shizuoka, Japan

These cute and fluffy stuffed capybaras have been strategically placed throughout the restaurant in the Izu Shabonten Zoo in Shizuoka to maintain appropriate social distancing.
Visitors can have a seat next to these capybaras as they dine before exploring the zoo famous for their Capybara hot baths!
Giant hats at Burger King Germany

Burger King in Germany has found a new way to keep customers socially distant. These huge social-distance crowns are DIY and a playful way to help visitors keep 6 feet apart in the fast-food outlet.
In Italy, the chain is selling an exclusive “Social Distancing Whopper” that features 3 times the normal amount of raw onions, ideally to keep people away with an onion-induced breath.

With just one chair at each table, dining can get pretty lonely. Maison Saigon, a Vietnamese restaurant in Thailand has placed Panda bears as a fun way to indicate where patrons cannot sit.
Shield pods in H.A.N.D. Paris, France

A designer in France has designed the Plex’Eat to shield individuals from infecting each other while eating. These plastic shield pods in the shape of lampshades are currently being used at the H.A.N.D restaurant in Paris, France.
Cardboard cutouts at Five Dock Dining, Sydney
In Sydney, Five Dock Dining, a modern Italian Restaurant has deployed cardboard cutouts to help make the restaurant seem fuller. These cutouts are placed in random seats and background noise helps to complement the din of a crowded restaurant.
Bumper bar tables in Fish Tales, Maryland
Fish Tales, a bar and eatery in Ocean City, Maryland Baltimore came up with bumper bar tables that encourage social distancing. The tables are giant tubes on wheels allowing guests to enjoy their drinks while staying apart from other patrons.
Pool Noodles at Café & Konditorei Rothe

The Café & Konditorei Rothev in Germany has come up with a silly new way to keep people socially distant. Visitors will have to adorn a hat with pool noodles attached to it to keep away from other patrons of the cafe.
Cardboard Dragon in Bar-B-Q Plaza, Bangkok
Bar-B-Q Plaza, famous Thai Barbecue chain has placed its mascot dragons around the restaurants to help with social distancing efforts. Their 1 table 1 diner policy means you get to still dine with a friendly face!
