Hong Kong International Airport transfers can seem intimidating with so many options, especially for first-time travelers. Luckily, you’ve come to the right place! Just keep scrolling to find out whether taking the bus, train, taxi, or booking a private car is the most convenient for you.
Hong Kong International Airport Arrival: What you need to know
Two terminals make up the Hong Kong International Airport–Terminals 1 and 2. When you land in Hong Kong, you’ll immediately find yourself at Terminal 1’s arrival hall. While there are counters available for you to avail of an airport transfer, there may be long queues. That’s why we suggest making your booking in advance for peace of mind and optimal convenience! Your past self will thank you.
Important Reminder: Terminal 2 is currently closed for expansion. Read the latest information about check-in counters and arrivals at Hong Kong Airport’s website.
Choose among these four Hong Kong International Airport Transfers
Airport Express
This is one of the fastest Hong Kong airport transfers to the city—in under 30 minutes! The Hong Kong Airport Express has three stops going downtown: Hong Kong, Kowloon, and Tsing Yi. Before booking your airport express ticket, check out the airport express timetable first to know when the train operates. From there, those hoping off at Hong Kong and Kowloon station have hotel shuttle buses available at the stop.
So where exactly can you purchase an airport express ticket? You have two options— MTR’s official website or through Klook. Booking directly from the MTR website may have limited payment options, so if you prefer to use your e-wallets or other local modes of payment not available on the MTR website, you can book on Klook as there are more convenient options available. Not to mention, your Hong Kong airport express ticket price comes out cheaper, too! You’ll receive a QR code once the booking is made. To redeem, you can easily scan this QR code to enter the gate and voilà; let the fun begin because your Hong Kong International Airport arrival work here is done.
Klook Tip: Another perk of choosing the airport express when going from the city to HKIA is that you don’t have to wait to get to the airport to claim your boarding pass. Yup, you read that right! Passengers who’re flying with Cathay Pacific can do in-town check-in at Hong Kong Station as early as 24 hours and up to 90 minutes before your flight. Smart Check-in Service is also available for those with e-travel documents like e-passports, travel permits, etc.
Do note that you need your Octopus card or Airport Express ticket to enter the in-town check-in area and that the service is available from 6 AM to 3 PM.
Private Airport Transfers
Traveling with your family? We recommend booking these private Hong Kong International Airport transfer services, which are ideal for big groups such as families or even your friends because of the larger luggage space available. Don’t worry about having to apply for an international driver’s license because that’s what booking our chauffeur-driven van is for!
Klook Tip: You can also book private car charters to get to popular destinations in Hong Kong.
All these private airport transfers are available at any time but expect an extra charge between 12:00 AM to 6:00 AM. Depending on which one you book, most chauffeurs will wait for you at the airport kiosk with your name on a sign for up to one hour after your flight’s scheduled landing. If you choose a specific time, you’re given 20 minutes of waiting time for free!
Public Buses
There are several public buses in Hong Kong that you can take to and from the airport, going all around Hong Kong. There are those that run throughout the day, as well as overnight buses, although they don’t run as frequently. Hong Kong airport transfer via bus is relatively cheap, with fares ranging from HKD 3.7 to HKD 60.7, which is 0.47 USD to 7.8 USD, although they take much more time than other types of airport transfers.
Taxis
Another great transportation option in Hong Kong is taxis, available directly outside of the Hong Kong Airport arrivals hall. As of writing, the red urban taxis are the most frequently available ones and cost at least HKD 35 to HKD 415, which is equivalent to 4.48 USD to 53.14 USD, depending on your destination. The cost of a taxi to Central is approximately HKD 335 [42.90 USD] (including the tunnel surcharges) and approximately HKD 265 [33.93 USD] to Tsim Sha Tsui.
Klook Tip: Watch out for the different colored taxis! If you’re going to the north-eastern part of Hong Kong, look for the New Territories taxis in color green, and blue Lantau taxis for Lantau Island and Chek Lap Kok areas. Going from one place to another will be a breeze as taxis are readily available in most areas.
How to get around Hong Kong
To get around the city, having an Octopus card is a must. Ride public transportation like the MTR, bus, ferry, and more with just a tap of your card! Not only that, you can dine and shop hassle-free with the Octopus card, which you can preload once you arrive at the airport. It’s an everyday essential when traveling in Hong Kong, especially for those who prefer cashless payment methods. Conveniently reload your card at any 7-Eleven, Circle K, 759 Store, McDonald's, VanGO, Watsons, or Mannings stores!
