We tried a whole bunch of Durians including the Mao Shan Wang and Oolong Nitro, and here’s our verdict!
We spent last Sunday afternoon with our friends from Durian Edition hosting a live video where we talked about everything durians! From how to recognise different breeds by their shapes, smell and unique features to tips on how to choose the freshest durians to feast on.

The best part of the day came when the live session ended and we were left with a wide variety of durians to test. Boy, were we happy to try their Mao Shan Wang and Premium Oolong Nitro Drurian!

Step 2: Follow these steps to check out your durian

Mao Shan Wang Durian Review
Like when eating cheese or drinking wine, there are certain variants of durians that are considered an acquired taste. It’s not that they taste bad but rather, their flavours can be quite complex at times and for first-timers, this may confuse them a little.
In the durian world, this would be your Mao Shan Wang. Sometimes sweet, sometimes bitter and sometimes both, every bite you take always ends with a pleasant surprise! The Mao Shan Wang that we tried was packed fresh from the husk and believe us when we say the ones we had were delicious!
Texture, colour and feel
The pieces of durian flesh were reasonably big with a nice dark yellow shade to it. At first glance, they might seem a little dry and hard. But upon picking them up, we noticed that it had a nice consistency to it where it was firm enough to hold its form and soft enough that you easily press into its flesh.
Taste
The Mao Shan Wang that we tasted leaned more towards the sweeter side, which is also my personal preference. Although this may differ between different fruits. Its flavour was undoubtedly the real deal!
With the first bite, an intense flavour bomb instantly hit the back of my palate. Sending waves of rich, creamy sensations throughout my body, just like how it should. If the taste ain’t intense, you’re not having the right thing.
As we explained earlier, it’s texture was just at the right consistency. Even upon the first bite, the remaining flesh still held its form, unlike other variants where some would instantly melt into your hands. If we were to compare it, it would be like the foam you’d get after whipping up a good batch of Dalgona coffee.
#KlookTip: Time permitted Mao Shan Wang is best served cold! Leave it in the freezer overnight and enjoy it the next day.
Editor’s note: The reusable tupperware that comes with every purchase really works wonders! The durian didn’t leave a smell in my fridge at all and I’m even using it to store something else right now.
Premium Oolong Nitro Durian Review
A Durian Edition special, the Nitro Durian was something that we couldn’t wait to try! What makes this special is that this Nitro Durian is instantly frozen by Nitrogen once it is dehusked at the factory.
This method actually seals all the flavours and moisture into the package, so it comes out as fresh as the real thing when you open your package. We feel that this is especially important for the Nitro Durian due to its distinct flavour punch.
Texture, colour and feel
It had the exact same qualities as the regular Mao Shan Wang that we tried earlier, the only difference was that the Nitro Durian was a little colder and softer to the touch.
The Nitro Durians can also be kept in your freezer for up to 6 months, and if you want to eat it, all you have to do is defrost it! This works best for durian lovers as you can get your durians and store it first. Even when durian season is over, you’ll still be able to enjoy them as fresh.
Taste
The moment of truth! With the first bite, we realised that the Premium Oolong Nitro Durian tasted exactly the same as the fresh Mao Shan Wang that we had earlier, but this one came off as more bittersweet.
As we continued eating, we realized that it was the aftertaste of the infused Oolong flavour that gave it a slightly more bitter and earthy taste. Another small detail that we realised was that the Premium Oolong Nitro Durian came off as less jelak. It may have been because of the Oolong infusion or the Nitrogen, but what we know is that it was shiok!
