About “The Great Era of Piracy” Asia Tour
One Piece “The Great Era of Piracy” Asia Tour Exhibition is set to be the first and largest anime-based experiential exhibition in Southeast Asia, with Malaysia being its first official stop in the region.
The exhibition has officially launched in Resorts World Genting in March 2023, and offers an exclusive chance for both long-time and new fans of the anime to catch Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates in this immersive experience.
Spanning across a massive space of 25,000 square feet, we were invited to explore the exhibition's 21 iconic thematic zones, following the epic journey of our favourite One Piece characters through the seasons. The space is filled with interactive exhibits, authentic pirate artefacts, and immersive multimedia displays, all of which make up the entire tour which takes about 45 to 90 minutes to complete.
Our Review of the One Piece Asia Tour Exhibition
1. Exhibition highlights ✨
With 21 different themed zones, there was a lot for us to see and do here. For long-time fans of the anime franchise, the entire experience would feel like a nostalgic recap of all of Luffy's adventures from the past two decades.
As for curious visitors and those of you who are new to One Piece, this is the perfect opportunity for you to step into the extensive and epic world.
We don't want to spoil too much of the experience for you, so instead, we've shortlisted a few highlights from the exhibition that are a must-see or must-do without going into too much detail:
- Enjoy 25 years of Luffy's adventures - Sit back and enjoy as a 180-degree mini-theatre showcases a pretty epic, yet sentimental recap reel of Luffy's adventures with the Straw Hat Pirates that will surely bring back memories for true anime fans.
- Relive iconic events from the anime - Witness recreations of momentous scenes from the anime, our favourites (or perhaps the most emotional ones) being the Summit Battle of Marineford, as well as the burning of Going Merry. *sobs*
- Visit important locations within the One Piece world - Step into fully immersive zones made to look like they came straight from the anime scenes, such as the sky island Skypiea and the submerged Impel Down.
- Play carnival games at Wano Country Shopping Street - A personal favourite section of ours is the lively streets of the One Piece Carnival, where booths of carnival games are set up. These games are pay-per-play though, so do bring cash!
2. Interactive games 👾
Another huge part of the experience is the various interactive games that await you inside, at 7 different zones within the exhibition. These games included 3 multi-sensory interactive augmented reality (AR) games, which were pretty cool to play, but you'll need to play it through the ONE PIECE app on your phone.
In addition to the AR games, the exhibition also features mini carnival games that are fun to play no matter your age. These include old favourites such as ring toss and balloon darts, as well as classic games that are tweaked to match the One Piece theme.
These games made the exhibition much more immersive, allowing us to feel as if we were actively participating in the One Piece world. To heighten the stakes (or to bring out our competitive streak), there were even real-time score leaderboards and the chance to win prizes. That was motivation enough for us to try even harder to score more berry points.
[💡Klook Tip💡] Download the ONE PIECE Great Era of Piracy app on your mobile phone prior to your visit, as you'll need it to play most of the games and to collect berry points. Visitors will be asked to download the app at the exhibition entrance, so having it already downloaded on your phone will definitely save you some time, as well as your mobile data!
3. Displays & photo opportunities 📸
Pictures or it didn't happen, right? Well, don't worry, because the exhibition is also home to many life-sized fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) sculptures of legendary characters such as Luffy and Katakuri, as well as recreations of iconic scenes from the anime.
These presented the perfect photo ops for anyone who would like to capture their memories here, and we certainly did plenty of that!
Take pictures alongside sculptures of your beloved One Piece characters, or within photo setups that are made for you to feel like you're in a particular scene. However, the highlight would definitely be the large and very detailed 3D sculpture of the Onigashima raid at the very end of the tour, complete with breathtaking fight scenes, such as the epic showdown between Luffy and Kaido.
4. Official merchandise store 🛍
Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates may have yet to secure the One Piece treasure, but we certainly have secured official One Piece merchandise! We ended our tour of the exhibition with a shopping spree at the official merchandise store, which features limited edition merchandise available for sale, as well as unique souvenirs exclusive to the exhibition.
There were a variety of novelty items with stunning One Piece designs, such as umbrellas, T-shirts, card holders and desk mats, but our personal favourites here were the bottles (there were so many designs to choose from!), a Chopper plushy in Luffy's clothes, and of course, the One Piece character figurines. Bring these home to add to your collection, or why not get something as a gift for a friend who is a fan of the anime?
Our verdict: Is it worth visiting the exhibition?
If you couldn't already tell from our happy faces in the photos, here's our answer: YES! Some of you may be pondering on the admission price, as well as the travel up to Genting, but we can say that it was definitely worth the fun experience we had at the One Piece Asia Tour Exhibition.
From its highly interactive zones with fun games, to the well-crafted sculptures displayed, we believe that the exhibition was truly crafted well and is a respectful nod to the beloved anime, made with their fans in mind. Even if you are completely new to the anime, the experience is pretty immersive enough for you to have fun, and who knows, you could even leave the exhibition as a newfound fan!
