If you think you’ve already explored the best of Singapore, think again! Just like any other country, Singapore is home to hidden gems waiting to be discovered. We spoke to Sarah Wan, the General Manager for Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia, to share with us her favorite hidden gem that makes her hometown even more wonderful than it already is. So, sit back and relax as we unravel the lesser-known side of Singapore! 🤗
Q: Can you share with us one of your favorite hidden gems / lesser-known spots in your home country and what makes it so special to you?
Sarah: I would recommend the Thow Kwang Pottery Jungle. It's the last remaining dragon-shaped kiln in Singapore, where you can get ceramics fired in a more traditional way (versus a conventional modern kiln). It represents to me a much slower pace of life in a present-day, often hectic Singapore.
Q: How did you come across this hidden gem? Was it recommended or did you discover it on your own?
Sarah: I used to pass by the kiln sometimes on my way to university (my alma mater is right next door). [I] Was always curious to visit it, but I never actually got around to doing it till COVID. In a way, the pandemic really helped us rediscover our own cities and countries.
Q: What activities did you enjoy in this place that you feel others should experience as well?
Sarah: I did a basic pottery class there one weekend. They also have a more professional course involving learning how to use a potter's wheel, but requires a few weekends to complete.
Q: How do you feel locals, like yourself, contribute to the charm and authenticity of this hidden gem?
Sarah: I love that most locals who go there respect the tradition and charm of the place. There is a very laid back vibe.
Q: How has this hidden gem influenced your perception of your home country?
Sarah: It is very unlike most parts of Singapore and almost feels lost in time. It doesn't really feel like any other part of Singapore, which is in a way, nice. Given our very small land size and obsession with growth, I love how there are little pockets scattered around the city that still strive to conserve a bit of history and heritage. Kudos to the next generation of folks who have kept this gem alive.
Q: Has it deepened your appreciation for its diversity and lesser-known places?
Sarah: For sure. I think as we continue to progress and grow as a nation, there is a greater appreciation amongst young Singaporeans for our roots and heritage. These things represent our Singaporean identity.
Our short chat with Sarah revealed an all-new destination that you can add to your itinerary for your next trip to Singapore. So, whether you're seeking to destress or looking to unlock a new skill, a visit to Thow Kwang Pottery Jungle might be just what you need! 😌
