Japan train ticket prices

Premium Japan trains

If you're travelling between multiple cities and want to reach your destination quickly, consider booking a Shinkansen, Japan's iconic bullet train. Shinkansen Tickets typically come at a premium price, averaging around 800 to 8,000 yen based on the distance. They offer a mix of speed and style, so rest assured you'll have a comfortable and upscale travel experience with an extra touch of class.

One-way trip in Standard Class

Nozomi Shinkansen: 14,000 to 22,000 yen

Hikari Shinkansen: 13,000 to 19,000 yen

Kodama Shinkansen: 12,000 to 17,000 yen

Affordable Japan trains

In Japan, local and suburban trains are typically the most affordable travel option. These trains often run on point-to-point routes or loop lines, making them ideal for short-distance and in-city travel, such as the famous Yamanote Line in Tokyo or the Osaka Loop Line. A short ride within a city can cost around 150-300 yen, while longer trips between cities or regions may range from a few hundred to a couple thousand yen. Local trains are also included in the JR Pass, so be sure to book your rail pass on Klook for the best discounts!

Prices of airport express trains

If you're looking for a speedy journey from the International airport to top cities in Japan, you can take the express train services to get you there efficiently. From Narita International Airport, the Narita Express can take you to Tokyo in just 36 minutes for around 2,400 yen. If you're arriving at Haruka International Airport, you can opt for the Haruka Kansai Airport Express, priced at around 1,300 yen, reaching Tennoji in about 35 minutes, Osaka in 50 minutes, and Kyoto in 80 minutes.

Prices of Japan rail passes (JR Passes)

You can also purchase a Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) to travel on the Shinkansen. A 7-day Whole Japan Rail Pass in ordinary coach class costs 50,000 yen, and a 7-day JR Pass in green first-class costs 70,000 yen. If you are travelling to only one or two prefectures, a regional JR Pass might be sufficient. For example, a JR Kyushu Rail Pass costs from 10,000 to 25,000 yen, and a JR East Tohoku Area Pass costs from 27,000 to 34,800 yen. Check out all the JR Pass offers here and compare the prices at one glance!

Prices of other Japanese trains

If unforgettable views and luxurious comfort is what you're after, you'll find all that and more on Japan's exclusive and limited express trains, like the Fuji Excursion, Spacia X, and Saphir Odoriko. Here are the prices for these trains (subject to the seat type):

Fuji Excursion : 2,300 to 8,000 yen

Spacia X : 1,600 to 2,000 yen

Saphir Odoriko : 4,000 to 10,000 yen
